Bloody Friday (1996)

Simon Yam starring in a video nasty? You have to be kidding! At any rate, even though this is not one of Yam's better known efforts in the genre, it is a solid effort, even though it may not quite be what a viewer might expect, especially given the title.

The plot has Yam playing a cop after a serial killer who takes out his victims on Friday (hence the title). However, there is really little "bloody" here. Don't get me wrong -- the movie is plenty violent in parts, but it is tamer than some of Yam's other films like Dr. Lamb. Bloody Friday is more of a "cat and mouse" chase movie versus an exploitation one, and it's pretty effective in that regard. There are enough twists to keep the viewer on their toes, but not so many as to make the film convoluted, and Yam's performance provides the glue that holds it all together. Bloody Friday is recommended for Simon Yam fans who want a little thinking to go along with the killing.
