The Informer (1980)

The Informer is pretty much your standard seventies cops-and-robbers flick. Even though it was made in 1980, there is still plenty of '70's cheese all around, from the butterfly collars to a funky-ass soundtrack. In the film, Wang Chung plays the standard level-headed cop in charge of a rag-tag bunch of misfits and stereotypes (the coward, the playboy, etc.) who are after a drug runner. After their informant is killed, the team turns to a former Triad member (Danny Lee) to infiltrate the gang and bring the big boss down.

There's really nothing that special about The Informer (except for maybe the fact that it's one of Kent Cheng's earliest movies). I'm sure you've probably seen this kind of thing dozens of times before in both American and Hong Kong movies. But for what it is, The Informer does a fairly good job. The acting is good and there's some decent action in the last third of the film. Besides some dopey comedic bits, I don't really have much to complain about -- but The Informer isn't exactly the kind of movie that you rave about either. It's a simple film that should provide entertainment for fans of the genre, but more casual viewers will probably be yawning halfway through.
