Voice actor - who is he?

Postby Clarissamia » Wed Mar 22, 2006 12:15 pm

Hi,
I'd like to know who does Sammo's voice in most of his films. Tried to find out on the net, no luck. Does anyone know?
Thanks, Klara

I'd like to know who does Sammo's voice in most of his films.

What do you mean by that?
Do we never hear Sammo's own voice?

Hi,
We do hear his voice in his later films. As far as I know, in HK films in the 70s and 80s didn't record sounds, it was all dubbed later. I guess back then they didn't have enough money for the right equipments. I really don't know why, but that is the way with sounds. Perhaps someone here can explain it better. I only know that Sammo's real voice is much different in tone to that in the dubbed fims. Sammo's is more... hm... manish, much deeper. In SPL and Dragon Squad it's his voice and from the older films in Somebody Up There Likes Me is him. Cannot recall more with his voice at the moment. It's a pity, I am sad about it, because I love his real voice. It's a shame it all got lost...

Films were recorded without sound because it was cheaper and quicker... you didn't have to worry about setting up microphones so that they got the dialogue and didn't appear in shot or cast shadows, etc. Also you didn't have to worry about background noise... important in Hong Kong! Also a lot of actors weren't fluent in Cantonese or Mandarin, whichever the film was meant to be in.

A few actors dubbed their own voices, but I would say most didn't - people like Sammo were too busy to go into the studio later and do it, but the big stars like him & Jackie had regular dubbers, so you at least got the same voice for them in different films... usually :p

Unfortunately, voice actors never seem to have been included in the credits for HK films... their identity is therefore a mystery... you'd have to ask Sammo I suppose! Unfortunately the "ask Sammo" section of his homepage seems to have disappeared...

I wish I just found this regular voice dubber for Sammo. This name -
Lam Bo Chuen - well, I didn't find anything on the internet about him.
Isn't the voice dubbers' name mentioned at the cast list in the end of the films?

Sorry, I can't be of any help. Perhaps Carlos can, he is the one, who reads all the credits.

Here's a radio interview of 林保全:

The interview starts around time 34:50 and 林保全 talks about doing Sammo's voice around time 39:20.

It's in Cantonese so...enjoy!

林保全 is actually famous for dubbing ドラえもん -- one of my favorite cartoon roles. That's why I know his name and also know he "is" Sammo.

In the interview, the host asked him what other famous roles he did as well. 林保全 said it's Sammo and then did Sammo's voice in a fighting scene.

And for Lam Ching-Ying, sorry, no idea.
