2x Monica Lo?

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Tue Dec 16, 2008 6:50 pm

While reading one of Dennis' links about the troubles at ATV regarding the Miss HK Pageant, I looked up previous Miss Chinese Toronto winners out of curiosity (last year's #2 was from here) and noticed that actress Monica Lo was a winner in 1996. She was born in 1978.

Her filmography here has her playing a "florist" in the Danny Lee flick NO COMPROMISE (1988), when she would have been about 10 years old. Are we sure this is actually the Monica Lo? And if she is in the movie, is she perhaps playing a child character instead of the florist? Or a child who sells flowers? I can't recall at the moment if I've even seen this movie, so I'm just curious. We've got proof that she was in DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS, uncredited, in 93 (at the ripe old age of 15, tight t-shirts and all ), so perhaps a visual confirmation might be good for the earlier film?

Definitely need a some visual confirmation on this (and credit scans) for both NO COMPROMISE and DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS.

I'm thinking that yellow-dress pageant shot in the Monica Lo DB gallery should NOT be there as it appears to be a completely different woman, in this case Emily Lo Suk-yi, who seems to have won first place and then second in successive years (not too shabby). Any birth-year discrepancies should be eliminated if these are two different ladies, right?

The pictures of Monica Lo from DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS certainly look like her, though. Of course, I can understand her wanting to keep that one off her website filmography if she really did appear in it (not that beauty queens haven't done far more sordid things!). I'd leave them for now unless we can prove conclusively that it's not her. (check those eyebrows, though! http://hkmdb.com/db/people/image_detail ... ay_set=eng)

NO COMPROMISE will hopefully get a gallery some day, or at least some credits. I might have it somewhere in the stacks, so might dig if I get some time.

Well my original interpretation/speculation was that: Monica and Emily Lo are one and the same. Two Lo Suk-Yis Miss Hong Kong and runner up in Miss China International in consecutive years? C'mon! Undoubtedly an attempt to shave a few years off. But now I see only one was Miss Hong and one Miss Toronto. Anyway, no doubt an auspicious name for pageants.

Chinese Wikipedia seems to be the final arbiter and recognizes two separate Lo Suk-Yis:

Monica

Emily

No credits for her in Daughter of Darkness that I could see. I'll post shortly.

Thanks for that. It's been a while since I've seen the film. Does the sister character have nude scenes or other such unsavoury business? If that is Monica playing her (and it sure looks like her), and she was 15 at the time, then that might be a reason her name's not on it. :? If it was just bouncy t-shirts, then perhaps she just didn't want to be associated with a Cat. III film in case her career lasted.

It's been a few years for me too.

After watching it today, Anthony Wong checks the dead sister (in the bathtub) and squeezes her exposed breast - to determine how long she's been dead. In the bathtub drowning, she gets soaked and there's a bit of see-through in her sports top.

I don't think that's Monica Lo playing the florist in NO COMPROMISE (see below). If it is, she was born quite a bit before 1978, 'cuz that ain't no ten-year-old. I think someone here was guessing . . . However, I wouldn't rule out this being the same actress in DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS, as there are similarities despite the change of clothes, hairstyle, etc, but I'm reeeeaaally skeptical.

These are the ten actors listed in the closing credits. Two Los (Money and Ken), but no Monica. Probably need to remove this film from her resume.

As to DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS, part of me wants to believe that that's really Monica Lo, though she's certainly stacked for a fifteen year old (not that that's uncommon or anything), unless of course she's older than her bios indicate. ;) The only thing throwing me is the lower part of the nose in those DoD shots. Otherwise, so much seems to match.

So, could the NO COMPROMISE flower girl be the DoD dead sister? Maybe not, but certainly I'm leaning to neither of them being played by Monica Lo.

As Dennis said, curiouser and curiouser . . .

Don't think The Florist and Sister are the same person. I might believe Sister is Monica but, besides her chest, how did she get to Hong Kong from Canada, then go back to win Miss Chinese Toronto? Nothing indicates any overseas work before 1997. According to her website her modeling credits 1994-1996 were all in Canada until her pageant wins.

Care to ask her via email from her website?

I'm inclined to agree. I stare at two pictures long enough, I start forcing myself to see similarities that aren't there!

I have to admit, the resemblance is uncanny, but I suppose it might be another actress. Like you say, the "chronology" of her life seems a bit dodgy if it is her in DOD, though not impossible in the world of showbiz, I suppose! ;) Perhaps the young Monica was eager for any kind of opportunity, flew over to make the movie, asked to be uncredited as a precaution, then flew back to continue the modelling career (hoping the movie might not catch up with her for awhile). Just a guess.

Care to ask her via email from her website?

It is tempting . . .
