Lust, Caution - trailer

Focus Features has taken the trailer of Lust, Caution off their website and also requested that YouTube to remove all the clips there but it is still widely available.
The movie is going to be released in Taiwan Sep, 2007. The Taiwan distributor said it is the English version posted on YouTube so it's Focus Features' discretion as to what action to take. (thanks, Fan)

China public restroom has 1,000 stalls
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070706/ap_ ... S142_MWM0F

BEIJING - They're flush with pride in a southwestern Chinese city where a recently-opened porcelain palace features an Egyptian facade, soothing music and more than 1,000 toilets spread out over 32,290 square feet.

Officials in Chongqing are preparing to submit an application to Guinness World Records to have the free four-story public bathroom listed as the world's largest, the state-run China Central Television reported Friday.

"We are spreading toilet culture. People can listen to gentle music and watch TV," said Lu Xiaoqing, an official with the Yangrenjie, or "Foreigners Street," tourist area where the bathroom is located. "After they use the bathroom they will be very, very happy."

Footage aired on CCTV showed people milling about the sprawling facility and washing their hands at trough sinks. For open-aired relief, there is a cluster of stalls without a roof.

Some urinals are uniquely shaped, including ones inside open crocodile mouths and several that are topped by the bust of a woman resembling the Virgin Mary.

"Other bathrooms are all the same. This one is very special, I've never seen anything like it," one visitor to the tourist area told CCTV.

There are also plans to build a supermarket nearby, which will sell toilet-related items, CCTV reported.

I have a feeling these won't be the last articles like these we'll see in the immediate future. I don't envy the system-wide clean-up China's gonna have to undergo in the next several years, but hey, if you wanna play with the other kids...

I saw some photos earlier this week with Bai Ling and a 'mysterious man' on one of the Chinese sites but I couldn't figure out who he was or what it was all about. Man, can you imagine Bai Ling being your mother?

Well, I'm sure this feed will into the general backlash against China as it becomes a bigger player in international affairs.

Sweet feathery GAWD, that's probably the scariest question ever asked on this forum!

And if anyone needs help answering that:

I think there's a fascinating book waiting to be written about all of this. Whenever I'm in a local bookstore, I always gravitate to the current affairs section and flip through the ever-expanding "China Rising"-style books that line the shelves, but they're all essentially about the same things: China's century, the rise to consumer culture, the growth of the middle class (on a mountain of cut corners it seems), the effect on western culture etc., but what the subject needs is a good "balance" book that explores the darker side of this rise without overly politicizing the issue. Sort of a "Fast Food Nation" for the new global power player. I'm sure somebody out there is taking notes... No doubt China will overcome these criticisms, hopefully without the usual obfuscation and misdirection from the government, but they won't do it just by having one of the cheapest labour forces on earth. Want a true middle class that matches the west? The price of that goes up over time, just as it did for the rest of us. :D

I don't know what's more pathetic: Bai Ling's continual exhibitionism, the idiotic comments on TheSuperficial.com, or my compulsion to watch and read about it.

It's probably your compulsion to watch and read about it. But it's OK, I share your affliction.

Three more brands of toothpaste flagged
http://www.thestar.com/Business/article/232985

"The `Made in China' label has sort of the brand image the `Made in Japan' label had about 30 years ago where people associated Japanese products with poor quality," Detomasi said. "China is at the stage right now where they are primarily identified with making fairly cheap products."

International pressure could lead to change, Detomasi says.

"In the headlong rush to develop and grow, these institutions tend to catch up," he said.
