Bauhinia nominations get it right in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Film Association announced its nominees for the 2007 Golden Bauhinia Awards to be announced on September 1. For the most part, the HKFA seems to have gotten it right, at least in the best picture race. Patrick Tam's After This Our Exile and Johnnie To's Exiled were two of Hong Kong's most acclaimed films of the year. Meanwhile, Jacob Cheung's Battle of Wits and Yau Nai-hoi's Eye in the Sky were rare standouts within the otherwise stagnating Hong Kong action genre. The bizarre (though totally welcome) twist is the nomination of Edmond Pang's yet-unreleased comedy Exodus. Although he won the best screenplay Bauhinia in 2002 for his peerless debut You Shoot, I Shoot, and although he's continued to make some of mainstream Hong Kong's most adventurous features, Pang has been relatively absent at the awards since. That Exodus leads the pack with 10 nominations is a fairly good indication that it won't disappoint.

Thanks for posting this. You just save me $75 in tickets to the gala premiere at the Toronto fest (gala tickets went on sale this morning). I lost out on my first two picks (the Sleuth remake and Julie Taymor's Across the Universe), so I was eyeballing this one as a back-up for us, but I've had this "so-so" vibe ever since I first heard about it. Might go for the regular screening, though, which is about half the price. Gotta admit, the reviewer nails it when he says contemporary Chinese cinema seems to revolve around two genres. Both of which are wearing pretty thin these days...

Oh Happy Day at No. 5? Man, that was the movie that made me realize the Korean fever had some seriously unpleasant side effects!
