S. Korean Stars Help Orphans Find New Families

Knowing nothing about this effort other than what I have read in this brief article I can only hope such efforts find success. There are a number of reasons for the large number of healthy Korean babies available for adoption, none of which I am qualified to comment upon, but the example of Toby Dawson (if that is a good example) is untypical.

I am very close to a person who was adopted from a Korean orphanage by an American family about forty years ago. Unlike the case with many if not most of the adoptions currently arranged, she is unaware of many of the things that most, at least in the U. S., take for granted--the medical history of her parents, for example.

In her situation she wound up with a family in the rural midwest, in a very white part of a very white state. Having been through the area a number of times I can attest that the people there are among the biggest and whitest anywhere. Adapting to her surroundings she became as "un-Korean" as one could be, saying now that she doesn't "speak Korean, cook Korean or dream in Korean". She has never been to the land of her birth and never plans to go.

None of which, of course, has any necessary significance outside of her particular situation although such stories sometimes resonate strongly with me.

So I hope that the efforts described in this story will help find loving Korean families for Korean infants who don't have them.

Very sad story:

A Dutch diplomat who caused an uproar when he returned an adopted South Korean girl after seven years said he did so on medical advice because she had such severe problems fitting into the family...

Perhaps this documentary might be of semi-related interest?
