Interview: Guess Wu's the Protege?
Actor Daniel Wu, this year's Hong Kong Film Awards' Best New Director, talks about finding the right second project to direct and his lead role in Protege.
Starring alongside Andy Lau, Louis Koo, Zhang Jing Chu and Anita Yuen, Wu plays undercover cop Nick, who infiltrates into the illegal trade by becoming a protege to drug lord Quin, played by Lau.
Quin’s plan to hand over his business to Nick puts the latter in a moral dilemma as he finds himself torn between his professional duties and the lure of the easy money and his new-found power.
Protege scrutinises all facets of a huge drug empire, and at the same time engages viewers with its effective storytelling. Directed by Derek Yee (One Nite in Mongkok), it became the No. 1 local movie in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year.
Question: How are things with you at the moment?
Daniel Wu: I am working with Derek Yee for the fourth time on (an upcoming film) Shinjuku Incident. I will be also working alongside Jackie Chan again. We will be filming almost entirely in Japan for this film so it should be extra exciting!
Q: How was the experience playing the role Nick in Protege?
A: It was a great opportunity to work with people such as Andy Lau, Zhang Jing Chu, Anita Yuen, Derek Yee and Peter Chan on this project.
Although it was the first time working with these actors, it was my third time working with Derek so it was comfortable and new at the same time.
Nick was a difficult role to play because he is a lonely character. Although he has people around him all the time, he can only trust and rely on himself.
Q: In the movie, you played Andy Lau’s protégé. Is Lau a teacher in reality? What have you learned from him? Do you think you will be the successor of Andy Lau one day?
A: Andy is a great actor and entertainer. He works so hard on everything and always has so much energy, it’s amazing.
From watching his performance in Protege, I got to see him settle into the role and become the character. It was inspiring.
Andy is great in acting and music and is an overall good entertainer. I am just an actor so it would be hard to follow in his footsteps. I just hope to forge my own path in the entertainment business.
Q: Does the movie give you an insight into the drug industry?
A: Yes, you can also see through this film that drugs can affect all levels of society in adverse ways.
Q: You have acted alongside Zhang Jing Chu before. How do you see her as an actor?
A: She is a great actress who puts 100 per cent of herself into her role. She spends a lot of time trying to understand the character and the environment in which she lives.
She pushes herself hard and you can see it in her work. She put herself in many uncomfortable situations for this movie and I respect her very much for that.
Q: What is the most difficult part in portraying Nick?
A: As Nick, I had to learn to express my emotions without really showing them. Nick has no one to share his problems with and no one to complain to, so I must be able show all these things without words.
Q: What is the most memorable scene from the movie?
A: (Warning: spoiler content) I think it is the last part when Andy’s character kills himself. It was intense. Everything felt so real and dangerous.
Q: You won the Best New Director award in the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards for The Heavenly Kings. How has that changed you?
A: Winning best new director of course was a nice surprise but has given me pressure to make a better second. I think more people will be interested to see if I can create success for the second time. But I must take things at my own pace and do a project that I truly have passion for.
I have a few ideas and am working on a couple of scripts but nothing is solid yet. As I said I will take my time to find the right project for me. Whatever I choose, it will definitely be something strange, original and off-beat.
Q: You have co-starred with many gorgeous actresses in love stories. Have you been in a situation where you are drawn so much into the story that it was hard to pull yourself away from intensity of the emotions?
A: I think in a love story it is important to make yourself fall in love with your love interest in the film. To convince the audience that you’re in love, you have to believe it yourself and the feelings must come from your heart.
Sometimes it’s hard to remove myself from the role I was playing but I always find a way — otherwise I would go crazy!
