BIRTHDAY GUY: Veteran actor Noriyuki "Pat" Morita was born on this day in 1932 in Isleton, Calif. Best known for his Oscar-nominated performance as lovable philosopher and martial arts teacher Mr. Miyagi in 1984’s The Karate Kid, the busy actor also appeared in many other productions. Morita broke new ground in Hollywood as the first Asian-American actor nominated for an Academy Award. This much-loved actor died last year of natural causes at the age of 73, but leaving fans with three new film releases in 2006 and 2007.
