I think Dennis Law should be looking to Hong Kong cinema for inspiration for his monster stage spectaculars.

Just imagine A BETTER TOMORROW: THE MUSICAL with choruses of black-suit clad assassins pirouetting and flailing bloodily across the stage as mechanical doves flutter above their heads and bits of burning paper are dropped from the rafters. Now that would be entertainment. Plus, all the larger-than-life, "played to the cheap seats" melodrama is already there in most Hong Kong films, making for an easy transition to the stage, where the projection of emotion on such a scale is essential. Move over WEST SIDE STORY! Look out Simpsons version of A STREETCAR NAMED MARGE! "Stellaaaaaah! STEL-AAAAAHHHHHH!" "MAAAAARRRRRKKKK!"

Or how about IRON ANGELS: THE MUSICAL, with the apparently Canada-based Moon Lee returning to the performing life as a wise den-mother training an elite squadron of sexy young Angel operatives to take on a supernaturally-empowered reincarnation of an ancient Chinese warlord. I'm going in this direction because it would appeal to Dennis Law's tendency towards cultural spectacle AND it would allow for some really cool special effects. Perhaps they could rig a car stunt sort of like the one in MISS SAIGON, not that that was a stunt, exactly....

Then again, Toronto couldn't make a stage version of THE LORD OF THE RINGS last for more than a few months, so maybe I'm off-base on this one.... :D
