The Chinese film watchdog on Thursday said that the five-year film-making ban imposed on young director Lou Ye will have a positive effect on the Chinese film industry.

A statement so Orwellian that it gives one pause.

If five years would have a positive effect, why stop there--perhaps ten years be twice as good.

This is the line that caught my eye:

"We believe our measures will accelerate the development of the Chinese film industry"

I was thinking about posting that line myself, Dennis, but you beat me to it.

Absolutely ridiculous that they think the rest of the world is going to believe them. I really hope Lou Ye DOES work around the ban. He's a great filmmaker, but he needs a great editor. SUMMER PALACE is powerful stuff, but it becomes numbing at 140 minutes.
