Graphic novel nominated for National Book Award - American Born Chinese

Another great tip, Dennis. Thanks! I somehow missed this coverage in my own hometown. I tried looking for the book at three local stores, but none had it. :( Looks like I'll have to order it from Amazon. :P

"American Born Chinese," by Gene Luen Yang (First Second, $16.95, 233 pages). This year, the National Book Award committee did something original; it picked a graphic novel as a finalist in its young people's literature category. The honor is wholly deserved, and being bestowed on an East Bay resident, Fremont's Gene Luen Yang. But to be perfectly frank, "American Born Chinese" appeals to all age groups.

The insightful, layered novel seamlessly weaves together three seemingly separate story lines. One focuses on the iconic Monkey King from ancient Chinese lore, another concerns a Chinese-American boy with assimilation troubles after moving from San Francisco to the 'burbs, and the third is about a stereotypical Chinese youth who embarrasses his cousin. That last story line comes with its own sitcom laugh track.

Rich and beautifully illustrated, "Chinese" is a lovely novel that delivers an invaluable lesson on the importance of cherishing our differences and our cultural identities. Yang might want to start writing that acceptance speech now.
