Amani takes it all off for new movie role

IPOH: Actress Sharifah Amani Syed Zainal Rashid has gone bald!

The award-winning actress, who turned 21 on Sunday, shaved her head yesterday for her latest role in Yasmin Ahmad’s Muallaf.

In the movie, Amani plays runaway youngster Rohani who is befriended by a schoolteacher named Brian (played by newcomer Brian Yap).

Muallaf also stars Amani’s younger sister, Sharifah Aleysha as her on-screen sister, Rohana, Datuk Rahim Razali, Ning Baizura and Yasmin Yusuff.

"She looks beautiful! She reminds me of Hollywood actress Samantha Morton in Steven Spielberg’s Artificial Intelligence — pure and almost waif-like with her long neck and flawless skin," said Yasmin after wrapping up the final scene featuring the hairless Amani.

Prior to chopping her trademark long, straight locks, the actress had been wearing a short schoolboy cut for two weeks, when filming started.

After completing the last scene, Amani said: "I have no regrets. My hair will grow back."

She confessed to having wept "for a while" during the shaving. She said she had the film’s first assistant director Pete Abdullah hold her hand while her head was being shaved.

Muallaf is Yasmin’s fourth feature film after Sepet, Gubra and Mukhsin.

Muallaf is expected to be released early next year.

Sharifah Amani under fire for going bald

PUTRAJAYA: Award-winning actress Sharifah Amani Syed Zainal Rashid has come under fire for her "daring act" in shaving her head for her latest role in Yasmin Ahmad’s Muallaf.

Two mufti felt the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the Information Ministry should come up with guidelines on the dos and don’ts so that artistes, particularly female Muslims, did not go overboard in their dressing or actions.

Selangor Mufti Datuk Mohd Tamyis Abdul Majid said Jakim should have come up with guidelines a long time ago for the artistes.

"Unlike Muslim men, going bald for (Muslim) women is forbidden in Islam. It is also sinful for men to act or behave like a woman and vice-versa," he said yesterday.

Tamyis added that Muslim artistes should not degrade themselves and the religion for the sake of getting popular.

In the movie, Amani plays runaway youngster Rohani who is befriended by a schoolteacher named Brian (played by newcomer Brian Yap).

Amani has said she has no regrets and that her hair would grow back.

Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Harussani Idris cautioned Muslim artistes not to be influenced by their foreign counterparts.

"As Muslims, we should not sacrifice our religion for the sake of wanting to be popular.

"I have been observing that nowadays, our artistes are becoming too open and daring, either in their actions or attire.

"So, it is only appropriate for the relevant authorities such as the Information Ministry to introduce regulations to make them toe the line."

Jakim director-general Datuk Mustapa Abdul Rahman said it already had guidelines in place for Muslim artistes.

"They (the guidelines) are like the law. There are people who break the law and there are those who are law-abiding.

"How are we going to compel them (to follow the guidelines)? We cannot force the artistes."

Among others, he said, the guidelines banned Muslim artistes from playing the role of non-Muslims in movies.

Malaysian actress berated by muftis for going bald

An award-winning Malaysian actress who shaved her head for a film role has attracted criticism from influential muftis who say her act is unIslamic and sinful, a report said on Thursday.

Sharifah Amani Syed Zainal Rashid, 21, drew widespread shock and interest after she went bald on Tuesday, with photos of her splashed across the front pages of Malay-language newspapers a day later.

But muftis in the conservative Muslim country have called on authorities to issue guidelines to prevent Malay Muslim artistes, especially actresses, from extreme behaviour or dressing, the New Straits Times reported.

"Unlike Muslim men, going bald for women is forbidden in Islam. It is sinful for men to act or behave like a woman and vice versa," the mufti of central Selangor state, Mohamad Tamyis Abdul Majid was quoted as saying.

The mufti of northern Perak state, Harussani Idris, said Muslim artistes were becoming increasingly daring and warned them against being influenced by the actions of their foreign counterparts.

"As Muslims, we should not sacrifice our religion for the sake of wanting to be popular," Harussani was quoted as saying.
"I have been observing that nowadays our artistes are becoming too open and daring, either in their actions or attire," he said.

"It is only appropriate for the relevant authorities such as the information ministry to introduce regulations to make them toe the line.
