Thought this bit was rather unsettling:

Zhang has a letter from an immigration officer saying his visa rejection was based on Section A11 (1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. It lists several factors, including financial means for the trip, ties to the country of residence, reason for traveling to Canada and whether the applicant would be likely to return at the end of the trip.

"I am not satisfied that you are sufficiently well-established and /or have sufficient ties in your country of residence to motivate your departure from Canada at the end of your authorized period of stay," he wrote, adding: "Should you wish to [re]apply, I would suggest that you do so only if your situation has changed substantively or you have significant new information to submit."

"Well Mr. Zhang, it appears you haven't got family or land or money we can strongarm to guarantee your return, so I'm afraid you won't be able to leave until you rectify these oversights."

Or maybe I'm just reading that too deeply... ;)
