Interesting piece. Haven't heard much from Shelley Kraicer in ages, though his site is still a good read even if it hasn't been updated in years. His exchange with Fallows seems odd, though. He sides with his Xinhua pal (whom he admits is OK with writing lies) about the "western" press sensationalizing the bad air story, but then admits in his last paragragh that the air is, well, bad! Terrible in fact. But somehow a foreigner pointing it out is belittling China rather than stating a fact that even the Chinese media often seems willing to admit to? The whole "westerners don't get it" routine is as gauche as what he's accusing them of. And if their media writers are all too willing to feed the people lies, who's worse?
