That's John Cusack? :?

I can't say for sure whether the writer is correct about China being so humourless as a whole (though he makes a few salient points), but I must say I kept waiting for the opening ceremonies to cover the recent "modern era" or even "the future" in some way, which never really happened. Obviously a song-and-dance about the communist and cultural revolutions would not have been apropos (thus Zhang's "sin of omission"), but the last 25 years probably deserved a little recognition. I guess we can read the games themselves as the culmination of that era.

I said the same thing - I don't know who that lucky bastard is, but it's definitely not John Cusack

According to some Chinese reports, he's a French photographer named "Chang".

From a recent issue out of my own office:

Karate Champs have you seeing double:

(Me, I'm seeing novelty casting in a future Hong Kong action picture!)

Incidentally, this pair also made our weekly full-page cover photo, with the heading "Twin Dragons". I should ask our editor if he knew that was the title of a certain movie . . . :D

The use of kids was the nod to 'the future' according to the analysts.

Thanks, Fan. That rings a bell now that I'm reminded.

Ahh. Now I see. Actually, I really should have realized that, considering children are an integral part of so many past opening ceremonies, but perhaps I was expecting something huge and staggering and different in light of how well they represented past glories.

Now, if only they'd stop yanking the videos off the streaming sites! They're gonna force me to grab one of those full-length bootlegs if they keep that up. Dammit.

The picture of Gong Li at the top of Dennis's post is one of the best "movie star" pictures I have ever seen. She looks like a throwback to the glory days of the the Hollywood star-making machine. Devastating image that is now on my computer's desktop.

One advisor to the Beijing Olympic Committee (BOCOG) defended the decision to use make-believe to impress the viewer. "It would have been prohibitive to have tried to film it live," he said. "We could not put the helicopter pilot at risk by making him try to follow the firework route."

You would think they might have designed a fireworks display that could be shot and transmitted live.
