Liu Xiang gets movie offer from John Woo
DESPITE his Olympics nightmare, Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang has a movie offer.
No, it won't be called Tragedy at the Games.
The new flick, to be helmed by Chinese producer-director John Woo, will be about sportsmen's fighting spirit, reported Apple Daily Hong Kong.
And Woo is eyeing diving princess Guo Jingjing and Liu to be his main leads, even though the latter's popularity had dipped after shocking the world with his withdrawal from the Olympics 110m hurdles last Monday.
Citing an Achilles tendon injury, he had pulled out of his qualifying heat in the event that he had won in Athens four years ago.
Guo, who won two gold medals in Beijing, has been widely acknowledged as one of the prettiest faces at the Games.
But Woo did not elaborate on why he picked Liu, China's fallen hero.
Woo, in Beijing for post-production work of the sequel to his recent movie, Red Cliff, said he has been following volleyball and gymnastics at the Olympics.
At a charity dinner in the Chinese capital on Friday, Woo said: 'I've been wanting to produce a sports-themed movie for some time.
'I want real athletes to be my lead actors so that we can portray the athlete's spirit accurately. I think Guo Jingjing and Liu Xiang will fit the bill.'
The charity dinner raised 10.35 million yuan ($2m) for a fund set up by actor Jet Li for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake.
However, filming for Woo's sports movie shouldn't be anytime soon.
Besides the Red Cliff sequel, he has other projects on his plate. First up is a movie titled 1949 which stars China actor Chang Chen and Korean actress Song Hye Gyo.
Following that, he will work on another production with Johnny Depp.
Meanwhile, Liu, who has apologised to his compatriots and vowed to regain his crown in London in four years time, is receiving traditional Chinese treatment for his inflamed tendon.
By the London Games in 2012, he would be 29 and will be in his prime as a hurdler.
The movie offer is likely to further worry his coach Sun Haiping.
According to Forbes magazine, Liu earned US$23million ($35m) last year endorsing almost anything from cars to credit cards.
The frequent commercial activities disrupted Liu's training schedules.
Sun, who broke down in tears at a news conference last week as he discussed Liu's withdrawal, suggested that the public exposure became a double-edged sword, adding more pressure on his protege.
'Whenever he goes out, he sees his own picture in the streets,' Sun said at the press conference.
