Liu Chia-Liang / Lau Kar-Leung

Liu Chia-Liang / Lau Kar-Leung

Postby Gaijin84 » Tue Nov 11, 2008 11:08 pm

seems that all the Lau family members in the database are listed under the Lau surname, save for Lau Kar-Leung (and Gordon Liu)... is there a reason for that?
I can see Gordon Liu since he is most known by that name, but I think Lau Kar-Leung should have the Lau name as his main listing.

Anyone agree/disagree?

If we do keep it as Liu Chia-Liang, should we switch his siblings/relatives to the same surname?

I object! :)
On his best known movies (and probably on the most of his movies) he's credited as Liu Chia Liang. "Liu Chia Liang" has more beautiful sound than "Lau Kar Leung", he is better known for his "Liu" name, and I by myself like it more :)
When there are Lau Kar Leung, Lau Kar Wing and Lau Kar Fai - it is easy to become confused who is who, but when one of them is Liu Chia Liang, the other is Lau Kar Wing and the third one is Gordon Liu - there are no confuses then.

And as Google shows:

Liu Chia Liang - 117,000 results :)
Lau Kar Leung - 88,100 results :)

That means that his "Liu" name is used and known more than "Lau"

So I think we should leave it as Liu Chia Liang :)

I object to your objection! :)

To me it seems silly for his own brother is written in the db as Lau Kar X and him not to be.

according to point 1.0 of our rules we must use the most common English name.

Dana Andrews and Steve Forrest were brothers and nobody thinks is silly they have different surnames.

I guess my argument is what is more common for his name then - when I asked a Chinese friend about Liu Chia Liang, he had no idea who I was talking about. After describing a couple of movies he said, "oh, you mean Lau Kar-Leung?" The google results seem to refute me though.

Can we run a poll?

Who are Dana Andrews and Steve Forrest?

I have to agree that the most "known" name should topline the performers DB entry, even though Lau and his brothers all have the exact same family name . . . in Chinese. I'm sure there are other cases in the DB where related performers might not be known by the same English spelling or Canto/Mando pronunciation of their family names, so standardizing them all could be risky.

Couple of sturdy actors from the olden days of Hollywood, the latter perhaps better known as a TV mainstay for decades (leading the cast of the 70s show SWAT and popping up in the blah big screen adaptation in 2003).

Here's Dana Andrews in a shot I grabbed from ZERO HOUR ages ago. Fans of the 1980 comedy AIRPLANE! (practically a remake) might appreciate the subtitle . . . ;)

Austin Wai and Kara Hui for example
