How many side stories are there and what are the english names for them?
I live in Canada and have a hard time finding them in Vancouver Chinatown.

I heard that there are side stories for.
Sister 13
Tai Fei
San Gai(Chicken)
Tai Jee(Prince)

and maybe more.
Can someone clarify this for me?

The film is called THOSE WERE THE DAYS and it's directed by Raymond Yip, who made the quite superb spin-off about Sister 13 called PORTLAND STREET BLUES. It's not up to the high standard of the Sandra Ng film, but it is quite a decent spinoff from the series -- not much action, but quite a tragic and touching story all the same. Look for the THOSE WERE THE DAYS from 2000, as the earlier films with the same title (there are three with the same title all up) aren't related.

From that link:

THE ORIGINALS
Young and Dangerous 1
Young and Dangerous 2
Young and Dangerous 3
Young and Dangerous 4
Young and Dangerous 5
Born To Be King

THE SPINOFFS
Sexy and Dangerous
Once Upon a Time in Triad Society 1
Street Angels
Those Were the Days (96)
War of the Underworld
Street of Fury
To Be No. 1
Once Upon a Time in Triad Society 2
Mongkok Story
Portland Street Blues
Young and Dangerous: the Prequel
The Legendary Tai Fei
Those Were the Days (00)

I'm a little leery of many of the titles in the spinoff list, as many of them are more ripoffs than spinoffs since they're not related to the original series. From that list, I know for sure that the ONCE UPON A TIME films, PORTLAND STREE BLUES, THOSE WERE THE DAYS (2000), YOUNG & DANGEROUS THE PREQUEL and LEGENDARY TAI FEI have direct connections to the Y&D franchise.

The rest range from quite good (SEXY & DANGEROUS, STREET ANGELS, MONGKOK STORY) to rather dismal (WAR OF THE UNDERWORLD, STREET OF FURY). Interestingly, WAR OF THE UNDERWORLD was made by the Y&D people, and it feels like it was pasted together from bits they deemed unworthy of inclusion in the main series, although it's only relation to Y&D is a scene in which some ridiculous triad boyz (including Ken Lo in a funny Ekin Cheng wig) fight over tickets to see Y&D 3 at the movie theatre!

Not sure why the 1996 THOSE WERE THE DAYS is included there, as it's completely unrelated and bears the same title as the Simon Yam movie MAN WANTED but with a "2," although it's hardly related to that film either.

Another way to find these in Chinatown shops is to simply look for the DVDs online first at various Asian DVD retailers, where you can at least see what the sleeve art looks like. Then you can spot them a little easier in those wonderfully cluttered Chinatown stores.

I disagree that the OUATITS films are really spin-offs from Y&D - Francis plays a very similar Kwan, but the plot events are not consistent enough for him to be the same character. More of a spoof of the series.

I checked on ebay and no info on some of them, also there are different covers for some of the same titles. ex. Young and Dangerous 3.

Good point about the cover. They do change sometimes, and certainly the number of bootlegs on eBay doesn't help.

You could go to sites like Yesasia.com, DDDHouse.com, hkflix.com, etc., punch in the titles and see what the legitimate sleeves look like, then as long as you're sticking to the legit stores in Vancouver, which I'm sure are as hard to find as they are in Toronto these days, you might stand a good chance of finding them. Just a possibility.

Probably even more reason to post DVD sleeves as images with quick descriptions of the DVD's content (missing or additional)

I think Universe randomly released a remaster of Y&D3 with a DTS track last year, which might explain the different covers. I'd check DDDhouse for info, and probably much cheaper prices than ebay :)

In an old post regarding BODYGUARDS OF THE LAST GOVERNOR, I mentioned that I had found legit VCDs and DVDs of this film in Hong Kong with different covers, resulting from the use of two similar but different posters used for advertising the film: Alfred Cheung appears as Deng in one, and as Mao in another.

My theory was that the poster was reshot after Deng's unexpected death in early 1997, which completely upset plans for the July 1 Handover ceremony. I suspect the Mao character replaced Deng to avoid any complaints about disrespect to the (then) recently-departed.

So, different covers may result, it seems, from any number of eventualities, legit and not legit.

which of the above is the one about "Prince". i have the whole set of the original YD and the one about "Chicken". my friend recommended the "san gei" one to me cuz it was touching.

I think the film you're looking for is THE PRINCE OF TEMPLE STREET, which stars Andy Lau as "Prince 12." Though similar in style to the Y&D movies, the film actually predates them by several years. I don't recall any of the films in the list above having a character named Prince.
