The Majesty Cat

C'mon guys, no Chinese title for this one? It's about the famous imperial protector depicted in 'King Cat' & 'Cat Vs. Rat'.

http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=10102&display_set=eng

Here, I know it from memory: 南俠展昭 ('Nan xia Chan Chao' i.e. 'Southern Hero Chan Chao'). Someone please update. BTW, I have doubts about that release date...too early for Roc Tien as dtr.; especially with that huge local cast, my guess is 1977 (don't quote me on that yet until I find back-up).

Well if you have an holding area for all these orphans somewhere for easy viewing & identification, I can act like Brangelina and try to 'adopt' a few. Thanks.

I think this thread over in the "Editors" forum might be what you're looking for. Not sure how far they've gotten with it, but it lists quite a few films missing Chinese titles. All of them, in fact:

Sorry, I don't have editor status so I don't think I can access your link. It states that it doesn't exist for me.

Bummer. There's probably a lot of good you could do in that thread. If you send the site's honcho, Bob (posts as "Guilao") a private message, I suspect you'd have no trouble getting upgraded, considering the valuable info you've already given. ;) That's the system they use here: contributions=full access, or something like that.

Oh, I think we've been thru this before years ago; it's not that necessary for me to bypass your velvet rope. To tell you the truth, I can't say that I plan on being that active to be worth all the trouble. I'm really not that interested in knowing the mechanics or the ins and outs of your editing system. I'm more interested in alerting the blanks to be filled and debunking bad data for future generations. It's just as good for me to bring up suggestions and credits boo-boos here like I've been doing and just leave it at that....so somebody just throw a dozen or so of those (60-70s) orphans on this very thread and that way, we can all collectively brainstorm on deciphering them together over beer and pizza; it's more fun that way .

Less a case of a velvet rope, I should think, than a safety precaution to make sure all the mistakes that got through in the early days are taken care of via a good system of checks and balances, so the site indeed doesn't end up like so many others that purport to be authorities on the subject. I don't think having an editor title absolutely requires constant contributions—if so, I'd have had mine removed ages ago, as I contribute to conversations here far more often than I'm able to contribute screencaps, correct names, etc. due to time constraints—so much as just being able to catch something once in a while.

A lot of the blank-filling that you're referring to seems to crop up in that Editors thread, although I didn't realize it was completely inaccessible to those without a "title." I just figured anyone could at least read it, if not necessarily contribute to it. The list of entries lacking Chinese titles was fairly substantial, as I assume Bob ran some kind of system check that turned up every needy title, and a couple of people have been providing video sleeves and credits for some titles to bring them up to date, but I suspect there's a few left unfinished, though I'd be hard pressed to pick 'em out as the translation thing is a out of my league! :( Perhaps someone else will be able to toss a few into a thread over here?

My sentiments exactly. I do get some good info here so it's only appropriate to reciprocate. How to is left up to the individual I guess.

Perhaps someone else will be able to toss a few into a thread over here?

Please, thank you. BTW, I do recall all the headaches Ryan used to share with me back in the day when he almost singlehandedly ran this bucket so I kinda understand the magnitude of it all (and I'm not implying anything like Groucho Marx' wisdom that 'I wouldn't want to belong to a club that would have me as a member' attitude) but I just want to keep things simple so as long as you can keep the window open, I'll continue being that fly on the wall, status quo. I'm just an analog guy living in a digital world.

Please merge 'Majestic Cat' with 'Ninja Swords of Death'

Postby kenichiku » Thu Apr 12, 2007 10:50 pm

Er, I knew something like this may happen. Looks like a consolidation is in order:

Perhaps you guys can bless this first. Not as bad as over at the IMDB but I bet lot of your orphans here lacking Chinese titles are like this.

I cannot merge this movie because the crew is not the same and I do not know which is the correct one.

This was the web image source I used for the Chinese title of Ninja Swords of Death. The stills on the video box are certainly from Ninja Swords of Death, and Judy Lee is in that film (she is not in Majesty Cat).

A Majesty Cat Source

Postby kenichiku » Mon Apr 16, 2007 3:52 am

Well you know how it is in this business....
ImageImage
My original citing of 'Ninja Swords...' was only incidental in seeing that now there are two different films with matching Chinese titles. I dug up my source (Cinemart #87 3/77) to double-check my original assertion (my release year is sounding more logical too). So now it's not about merging the two pardon me, it's about finding out what 'Ninja Swords..' true Chinese title really is & original release English title for that matter (i.e. tip being that if there's no reference to 'real' Japanese ninjas involved with that Chinese film, chances are 'Ninja..' is not an original English title but some overseas distributor's derivative title with saleable keywords) or the origin of the 'Flying Swallow' title - HK, Taiwan, Singapore, Southeast Asia? It just may be another AKA or the original English one if everything else is correct or 'The Majesty Cat' is just an AKA or working title as usually witnessed in old Cinemart spreads.

The character Chan Chao has always been referred to as 'the Royal Cat' thru history so I would think a title about a bird i.e. 'Swallow' is out in left field here (unless it refers to some other character as a plot focus). Re: Judy Lee you're right, she doesn't appear to be in it by looking at the credits in my spread. Maybe 'The Lawman' aka 'Shen Bu' AND 'Flying Swallow' are a part of a series of sequels. I dunno anymore. I never seen any of these films so I must defer to those who has, so I think you guys familiar with them can take it from here, thanks.
