The Street Fighter (Sonny Chiba)

Postby Easternpaul » Sun Jan 15, 2006 5:13 pm

Hi there!
I just watched "The Street Fighter" (1974) with Sonny Chiba.
Wow. A hell of a movie!!! 8) :D

Are there more movies similar to that one? Especially from the 1970ies?

Thanks a lot!!!
Cheers, Paule 8)

I've always been a big Chiba fan, as he is more of the down and dirty fighter.

The Executioner is okay, but Killing Machine is probably his most badass film in my opinion. If you dig the down and dirty, pick up some Jimmy Wang Wu like Master of the Flying Guilltine. Crazy film, but a must own.,

Yeah, Killing Machine hsa that great Chiba exploitation we all know and love. He breaks many arms in that movie, all in nice graphic detail. While youre at it, pick up Boxer from Shantung.

There were, of course, the three sequels to STREETFIGHTER, which are all quite good:

RETURN OF THE STREETFIGHTER (1975)
SISTER STREETFIGHTER (1976)
STREETFIGHTER'S LAST REVENGE (1979)

All of these are widely available on public domain DVD releases, and most of them are 2.35:1 widescreen taken from the same source, the New Line Cinema laserdiscs released in the early 90's right around the time footage from the series was used in Tony Scott's TRUE ROMANCE.

I'd also highly recommend THE PINKY VIOLENCE COLLECTION, an absolutely jaw-dropping 4-pack of delinquent schoolgirl action pictures that really have to be seen to be believed: the cool pink box contains CRIMINAL WOMAN: KILLING MELODY, TERRIFYING GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL: LYNCH LAW CLASSROOM, GIRL BOSS GUERILLA and DELINQUENT GIRL BOSS: WORTHLESS TO CONFESS, as well as a bonus limited edition CD of Reiko Ike songs. Basically STREETFIGHTER movies with a LOT more sex and violence. None of these films are available outside this set.

From the same company, I'd also recommend SEX & FURY:

And if you haven't seen them already, the LONE WOLF & CUB series is phenomenal, and way bloodier than the STREETFIGHTER series. This link is for the box set, but all titles are available individually:

The UK Optimum DVD has released 'Street Fighter' in: Anamorphic full widescreen, Japanese, remastered/restored, uncut and English subtitles.

American 'Killing Machine' mutes the intended green tone to a reddish tone unlike the UK DVD.
