Just found this website:

http://www.koreanfilm.or.kr

I'm sure some of you already know about this site, but for those who don't there's some fantastic material there available for free download, as well as plentiful news releases, stats and directories.

Most interesting are the Korean Cinema yearbooks, nicely designed PDF books that, in the case of the 2004 edition I was just looking at, run upwards of 350 pages, nicely designed and with a big colour photo for every film. The yearbooks don't offer much analysis, but they are comprehensive overviews of ALL the films released in a given year, plus all the ones in production for the following year, as well as animated films, short films, documentaries, main cast lists, stats, box-office breakdowns, export info, theatres & screens, market share tables, massive lists of production companies (with addresses, phones, etc.), cross-referenced indexes and much more. I'm seriously thinking of printing a few of these off at work on the big color xerox press they've got just to have them around for reference at home.

There's also several downloadable Korean Film Observatory booklets which run around 24 pages each. These are extremely well designed overviews of the industry, box office stats, festival prospects, and more charts and photos than you'd know what to do with.

Now, if only the Hong Kong Film Fest group would do something like that with all of its books. Even a few bucks to download them wouldn't be such a bad thing when one considers the shipping charges associated with the real books. Life would be so much easier.
