• View topic - Which Asian films seem unique to your taste?

Are there any films in your top 10 of all time list which you can hardly imagine would appear on the top 10 of anyone else?

There are about 3 films which I suspect people might scratch their head when I tell them they're in my top 10. They are the Japanese films LAST QUARTER starring Hyde and STEREO FUTURE (source of my avatar), and the Korean film RESURRECTION OF THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL. All are rather average films, so it is interesting that they've evolved into some of my favorites over time.

What about you? Is your top 10 largely well-known films, or not?

My most obvious choice is City Hunter. I've watched it many times and it still cracks me up. I never understood why so many people consider it one of Jackie Chan's worst movies. For whatever reason, it struck a chord with me.

GOLDEN CHICKEN 2 and METADE FUMACA would both make my top ten HK films list, but both would also be on my top 10 films list. Of course, neither list could ever be written in stone, but for now those two have stuck in my head since day one as being quintessentially Hong Kong. Perhaps they're overly wistful of nostalgic, but I like that in a movie, and both have lots to say about the nature of the city and its people.

I always used to think I was the only one who regarded Sammo Hung's WHERE'S OFFICER TUBA? as a comedy classic, and I suppose it would have been on my top ten. Thing is, it seems to have picked up quite a following now, so I don't think it really applies.

I'd always been an advocate of Jackie's universally despised TO KILL WITH INTRIGUE, although I wouldn't have put it in my top ten. But I'm pretty sure that since I've been watching and re-watching the Shaw films I'm pretty much going to hate it now :lol:

City Hunter is a great movie, and lest not forget Fantasy Mission Force, this is a true piece of art, I simply adore it

City Hunter: Although not a top 10 for me, I nevertheless found it highly enjoyable. Fantasy Mission Force, on the other hand...

And Metade Fumaca was highly influential in broadening my taste, so I have high regards for it.

You didn't like Fantasy Mission Force :shock:

I love this movie, but can agree to that it's an acquired taste :lol:

I just wish it was out there in a better looking version, to me it got everything, they mix so many different things, and does it in a wonderful way.
It got just about everything you can think of, funny slapstick, great action sequences and doesn't take itself to seriously.

Who can say no to a movie that has WW2 Nazi's riding on the rooftop of 60-70's american cars, mixed with ghosts and amazon women

It brings a smile to my face every time I watch, and is probably the Jackie Chan movie I enjoy the most, although it's not the best made one

The avatar's from Return of the Street Fighter. It struck me as rather funny, so I used it. I don't think anyone got my last one - Peter Bark from the wonderfully inept Italian horror/soft porn/gonzo zombie movie Burial Ground.

Anyway, funny this topic should turn on to Fantasy Mission Force as I've been thinking about it a lot lately. I'd love to see this film again as it's been sooo long since I've seen it. I have the Eastern Heroes DVD but I never bothered to watch it due to the nature of the discs. I kind of want to see it as nature intended. As Jackie's other "minority interest" films are coming out on DVD in pretty nice form, maybe this will too? I have a feeling I might appreciate it better now.

Is Fantasy Mission Force the one where Adam Cheng shows up for pretty much no reason, complete with music from Chor Lau Heung?

Thanks. Unfortunately I've only seen about 2 HK movies this year. It seems I spend a lot of time researching films but don't have the time to watch them!
