It's the grandiose adaptation of "Thunderstorm", one of the greatest stories in Chinese literature.

I had read that this was an adaptation of Shakespeare. Anyone know the real source?

It's based on a play by Cao Yu. There are numerous film versions of it. There's a 1984 (1985, in our database) mainland version that's very good. The 1957 version features Bruce Lee and there at least three others in our db.
