DB Title Update: NEW OPTION: RUN AND SHOOT (2003) (#1)

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Wed Jul 25, 2007 4:01 am

Well, I'm finally done my Michael Wong marathon, and it was pretty painful. Might take awhile to recover, but let no one say I don't suffer for the accuracy of this website!

There are ten of these movies in total, including the pilot feature THE NEW OPTION (2002). We currently list 12 "New Option" titles in the database (as do other websites, including LoveHKfilm, so I have a feeling I know where they got their info ;) ). I've updated some info on the ten that should be here. The two that shouldn't be here can be safely deleted. They are:

This one, which is a U.S. retitle of NEW OPTION: PUPPET HON (which is already in the DB):
http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?i ... ay_set=eng

and this one (which is the U.S. retitle of NEW OPTION: THE REVENGE)
http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?i ... ay_set=eng

Those two can both be deleted.

--------------------------------------------
It's also a safe bet that Clarence Fok did NOT direct any of these, as per the database entries on most of them. They're pretty sloppy (especially the first three, not including the original feature) and rely on more slow motion than should ever be allowed. Not sure if the credits will reveal directors on any of these, but if not, we should probably leave that spot blank. There are times these almost feel like training exercises for some unnamed would-be director in the Wong Jing factory.
--------------------------------------------

Several episodes in this series were renamed for release in North America, which is probably where the extra entries came from. These U.S. titles have all been made into aliases and/or switched in cases where they were entered as the main titles. As the VCDs from which these credits are taken came from Hong Kong, the Hong Kong titles should be used.

In the case of this first one, RUN AND SHOOT, the original DB entry was KILL IN CENTRAL RESTAURANT. The latter title is the U.S. re-do, and sucks because it only refers to a brief opening scene.

Two members of the dance-pop band EO2 appear in this entire series, Eddie Pang and Otto Wong. Their bandmates Eric Tse and Osman Hung appeared with them in the movie that launched this series, THE NEW OPTION (2002), but the two don't appear in this set as far as I can tell. I also updated Tse's entry to include his English name as part of his main entry name instead of as an alias, as he's usually billed that way. Also added "EO2" as aliases to Tse and Hung, so that a potential search of the band will bring up all four members.

Sleeve, title card (same for all episodes), opening credits and closing credits of RUN AND SHOOT appear below. The sleeve has already been uploaded and posterized, as have sleeves for all the others. Note the DB Chinese title for this needs some reworking as per the sleeve. Also, the title screen on this one is different from the sleeve, so I'll leave that up to Carlos or whomever to decide which should be the proper title and which the alias.

There's a LOT of duplication in the credits of this series (see other posts), but I felt they should all be included for the sake of completeness. Please check cast lists carefully as actors playing major roles are often billed at the end of the closing cast block.

if nobody stops me in 15 days I will merge the 2 movies. Anyway I think it is the opposite case: the editor who uploaded these movies copied the wrong info from other sites.

Fixed Chinese title, added Chinese alias, writer, pres., prod. man, plan., phot., mus., art dir., ed., gaffer, costumes, makeup, hairdresser, assist. dir., continuity, props and 30 actors more.

Good point! ;)

I've updated character names (where possible) on all the entries you've done so far.

Also added English as a spoken language on all of them (including the original feature) since, well, these are Michael Wong movies... Left Mandarin intact as a language because most—if not all—of these feature it in some measure, and not just as an alternate audio track. One actress manages to switch from Mandarin to Cantonese from one film to the next!

One more to go!
