Ku Long or Gu Long

A thread over at mhvf is currently discussing the 'correct' way to spell the name of legendary wu xia author Ku Long/Gu Long/Koo Lung. The main entry here is as Ku Long, but a search on Google reveals absolutely no hits for Ku Long but many hits for Gu Long.

Should we change our primary name to reflect what appears to be the consensus spelling?

Also, what's this about him being the same person as Louis Cha? Didn't we decide this was not the case? It's still listed as an alias for him.

I've seen at as Gu Long alot, so I'm willing to change the main name to this name, however, Gu Long is listed as an alias.

Ku Long, Gu Long, Koo Lung, whatever you like. It's all semantics. They are all transliterations of the Chinese character.

If I remember right, Gam Yung/Jin Yong is the pen name for Louis Cha Liang Yong.

Silver Fox

In Mandarin it is Gu Long. Somewhere along the centuries, somebody decided to follow Mandarin spelling but change a couple of things, so now Jie is Chieh, Xia is Hsia, and Gu became Ku.

I just added Gu Long as an alias today

I like the idea of making that the main name though.

Jin Yong = Louis Cha sounds right to me. Should I remove the alias from Gu Long?

There is no credit for Jin Yong in the DB at all - have the credits for Jin Yong and Gu Long been merged? According to this website, several of the novels that appear to be the source for movies credited to Gu Long were actually written by Jin Yong:

http://www.wuxiaworld.com/jy/novels.htm

http://www.wuxiaworld.com/ seems like a pretty authoratitive source

BUMP.

Anybody willing to help sort out which credits should go where? These two authors are some of the most important figures in HK movie history, so it seems rather criminal to have them mixed up in the DB!

There is no "consensus" as to the way a Chinese name is romanized unless the person is question has "customized" their name or added a non-Chinese name (i.e., Andy Lau vs Liu2 de2 hua1). There are three widely used methods of romanizing words spoken in Mandarin--pinyin, Wade-Giles, and Yale; and at least 2 for Cantonese, although I really don't know anything about Cantonese.

The only proper way to spell something is to know the Chinese characters used in the name and romanize them appropriately by looking them up.

In the case of Gu Long--that is how his name is pronounced in Mandarin. The actual "spelling" is dependent upon the romanization system used. With Pinyin, it is Gu3 Long2--as it is set up, and consistently used in the database.

Louis Cha is an anglicised pen name for Jin Yong--who is not Gu Long.

Bob

Should EVERY movie adapted from a Jin Yong/Gu Long novel be creditted to the author? And if so, should they be creditted as "writer" or "story?"

Jin Yong only wrote 14 novels

Jin Rong, ID 15117, should be deleted. 2 Credits (Brave Archer 3-4) have been transferred to Jin Yong.

Gu Long has quite a lot of credits as "Writer" where I'm pretty sure he only wrote the source material. Should I change them all to "Story"?
