The Unusual Youth (2005): everything but the kitchen sink!

Postby Mike Thomason » Fri Nov 18, 2005 10:03 am

In the spirit of this being the most comprehensive HK movie resource and, like Baz Luhrmann before me, because I can-can-can...the complete credits for Dennis Law's THE UNUSUAL YOUTH...

Might I inquire if the software revelation has anything to do with capturing screenshots? I'm on a Mac Laptop with OSX and the damned thing disables screen capture whenever a DVD is playing, so I'm pretty much useless when it comes to posting captures (not that I'd be able to come up with much very, but still...).

Is there some way around this, or is such activity strictly limited to PC users?

Thanks for any tips in advance!

Brian, I am computer geek, so I have more computers than any single human should be alowed to have, and I am pretty platform agnostic as long as it is unix; but my home system of choice, by far, is a Mac Powerbook...and secret handshake aside, I use VLC (http://www.videolan.org) and play DVDs from that, and use normal screen caps (Command-shift-4 usually).

And another thing, people may be interested to know that I actually run this website on Apple hardware--a G4 cube running Linux...and has been doing so for 15 months straight.

Yep.

The coolest websites run the coolest hardware...it's an internet truism...or something like that.

Oh yeah, and before I forget...the unlisted anywhere cameo...

Uncredited in both the cast listing, and as a character (but the officer in charge of the police station that Lam Suet acts as cook for). :)

Added last prod. company, sound editors, F/X, all the actors and their roles.

Sorry I am not good for IDs and cameos.

The pic is of Simon Yam from his very brief unbilled cameo.

For Simon: are you sure 133% is right for 16:9 1.78? The above images seem much "wider" than they should be -- closer to replicating a "scope" (2.35) image than retaining their 1.85 (or 1.78 ) ratio... :?

You're right - those pics have nearly 2:1 aspect ratio! (In XNview, if you drag the mouse over the image from top left to bottom right (i.e. select the whole image), it prints the width, height and aspect ratio in the status bar at the bottom - quite handy!)

The resolution for a 16x9 aspect ratio image that's 480 pixels high is the rather awkward 853.3333 x 480, which some quick sums indicate is 1.185 * 720 - so 1.3333 is definitely not right - sorry for the misinformation! NTSC doesn't have a square pixel aspect ratio, so it's not a 4:3 -> 16:9 transform.

I usually use fixed pixel sizes, e.g.

16x9 sizes: 1024 x 576, 853 x 480, 800 x 450, 720 x 405
4x3 sizes: 768 x 576, 720 x 540, 640 x 480

I have scripts set up for most of those sizes so I just load the specific one I want, rather than using a ratio :)
