Thanks very much. I've replaced Shi Jin to yours. I can't remember how I came up with mine at the moment. It must have been a cut and paste error.

It's quite good. The basic story is this: Joan Chen aspires to be a singer and applies to the army. But she is suspect because she and her parents are retured Chinese (from Malaya or other rubber producing country). The army investigates her background and her parents. Her dad is a suspected 'spy' a former rubber farm director now reduced to being a water bearer. In addition, she has a brother living overseas. Via flashbacks, the story is told of how her parents met and married and finally returned to rebuild the motherland after the 1949 liberation. There's the young army investigator searching for the truth countered by an older hard line hack (think Lau Hark Suen). I'm guessing the former represents the new China and older one the remnants of the Gang of Four era.

Joan Chen sings (probably dubbed) a few songs and frequently reminded me of an exuberant Grace Chang. She looks lovely, too.
