Does anyone know if they are going to be put in region 1 dvds? It seems strange to me that they are english subtitled but not playable in US dvd players.

Miramax has the rights to a handful of Shw Brothers movies for R1, but as we all know their reputation, get the Celestial/IVL DVDs instead. Whatever they bring to R1 will probably be redubbed and cut so why take the risk? Celestial is selling the rights to whomsoever wants to buy them, so they can make some money. Get a region free DVD player and you'll be fine.

I will quote from elsewhere with much less vehmence and ill will toward Gweilos: The Celestials were intended for the Asian market only, and I think Celestial WAS at one point shopping the catalog around here in the US, as an "all or nothing" deal- which didn't get too far. True, Merryaxe has the rights to SOME of the good ones for region one release, but they passed up a LOT of the goodies, and rumor has it there are a few companies in the US that are trying to get something going for what MX didn't get their greasy hands on.

As far as the region free player thing goes, if you are low income (not cheap, as an unkind comment put it on another forum) you can always get the VCDs, or, if you want a good deal on a region-freeable DVD player, go get a Cyberhome DVD-300 from Sears, it does PAL-to-NTSC conversion as well...essential for those HKL discs from Reg 2.

Do you think in the future that the shaw bros films on DVD and VCD will come down in price, go out of print, or just carry on as normal?
how long do you think itll be before they go OOP? thanks.

I think given the demand they will be in print for some time to come,
and with that the prices will stay the same or go up, as COL does.
I have already seen one HK online retailer posting + and - curves for prices on certain titles that are standardised on others, so...

Well It wasn't for being cheap. I happen to have a very expensive Sony DVD player that unfortunately cannot be converted to region free. I love the way it plays my region 1 stuff. I have a region free player but it doesnt look as crisp. Plus when my friends want to borrow films I can't lend them Celestial stuff because they do not have region free players. Also it was more of curiosity over something being made exclusively for the asian market, yet having English subtitles as an option of the disc. I wasn't complaining just asking. I don't want to see Miramax pillage these great titles, it was unfortunate how they messed up Iron Monkey.
