A new HK vcd release of this 'top 100 Chinese films of the 20th century'. Some have even called it _the best Chinese film ever made.
Previously available on a mainland vcd and a box set with the new version by Tian Zhangzhang. Unfortunately, still no English subs. However, it plays almost like a silent picture and summaries are available the web. Nuances are the full richness of the film are lost, but this is a must see film for fans of true classics.

Hailed as one of the best films in the history of Chinese cinema, director Fei Mu’s original SPRING IN A SMALL TOWN is a real masterpiece and a rarety to see in cinemas. It is, like the recent remake by Fifth Generation veteran Tian Zhuangzhuang, an essay on love and desire, cleverly intertwining the lives of five people who live in a small town where nothing ever changes. It starts out simply enough - VO: "Everyday after I'm done buying groceries I like to walk for a while along the top of the city wall. It's already become a habit with me. Walking along the city wall, I feel as if I've left this world behind. My eyes see nothing. My mind is empty. If it weren't for the vegetable basket on my arm and the medicine for my husband in my hand, I might not go home all day." But then, where love and spring are involved, things do indeed begin to change… A highly charged melodrama with stunning performances, fantastic cinematography and an intricate storyline.

The film screened here on SBS (TV) about three years ago. Unfortunately, the reception was too poor to watch :(
