Best of 2006

Postby Sydneyguy » Mon Feb 05, 2007 9:42 am

Looking into how many hk movies i have seen in 2006 just isnt that many!! ITs actually hard for me to do a top 10 list, especially since i havent watch that many movies, but i guess i at least have to mention that

EXILED is by far, for me the best movie of 2006.

Other movies that have to be mentioned are FEARLESS and DRAGON TIGER GATE (only because of the action in it, too bad about the rest of the movie!!)

Election 2 was a disappointment for me, well i didnt like the first one, but it looks like im in the minority.

Battle of Wits could of potentially been a lot better of a movie

Rob b hood was entertaining but not great and so was WO Hu.

It looks like thats all i watched from hk movies of 2006, isnt that a bit sad when 2005 was so much better (SPl, Crazy in the city )my pick for 2005 best movie), b420, it had to be you)

These are the titles I bought from the past year of Hong Kong cinema (I don't consider Fearless, A Battle Of Wits or The Curse Of The Golden Flower "Hong Kong" movies...simply because they weren't! They were all Mainland Chinese films, some with limited investment from Hong Kong or involvement of HK film industry folk, but they were all majority Mainland productions, financed with majority Mainland money and even post-synched in Mandarin, the primary Mainland language du-jour. Thus, I haven't counted those three films).

Cocktail
The Shopaholics
My Kung Fu Sweetheart

Super Kid
Without Words
49 Days*
2 Become 1

Marriage With A Fool
I’ll Call You
Bet To Basic
Isabella
Undercover Hidden Dragon
The Heavenly Kings*
Election 2*
Half Twin

Lethal Ninja
Don’t Open Your Eyes
We Are Family
Feel It…Say It
Dating A Vampire
Love Undercover 3
Re-Cycle*
Dragon Tiger Gate
Dog Bite Dog

Love @ First Note
On The Edge*
My Name Is Fame
Men Suddenly In Black 2*
Rob-B-Hood*

Fatal Contact
Nothing Is Impossible
Exiled*
Diary*
Wo Hu*

My Mother Is A Belly Dancer
Mr. 3 Minutes
Heavenly Mission
Wise Guys Never Die
Confession Of Pain

1. The ones in bold type were the ones I actually managed to watch.
2. The ones with an asterisk next to them are the ones I'd feel were worth a recommendation (solely based on personal opinion, of course)

I bought all of these titles because I just don't have access to a Chinese language cinema in my part of the world, and with most HK DVDs working out at much less than the cost of a cinema ticket it's a bit of a no-brainer for me. Taking a chance on a movie, sight unseen, through DVD purchase -- at equal or less expenditure than a standard cinema ticket -- isn't much of an issue to me; I figure even if the film turns out a dud, at least I got to see it and make my mind up for myself. :)

Out of all those on your list, I only saw three.

Shopoholics: Painfully awful
Isabella: Liked it a lot.
Dragon Tiger Gate: so-so

So I can't even make a top two list.

Using Mike's list for reference, but including Fearless because I want to, my top films - in fact, all films:

Fearless
Exiled
Dog Bite Dog
Isabella
Rob-B-Hood
My Kung Fu Sweetheart
-------------
Election 2
Lethal Ninja

The dividing line indicating which ones I actually think are worth watching :-)

Trust me, had Fearless been a HK movie it would have made the "worthwhile" list, but since it wasn't a HK movie...well, you know the rest... :P

I agree that it wasn't, and have no justification for putting it on my list other than that given :-)

I like Wu Hu and Election 2. Exiled was boring. Rob B Hood and Nothing is Impossible are very entertaining.
