Re: New To HK Movies

Horror:

Most HK horrors are in the "no budget horror comedy" genre, and are largely pretty crap. Actually scary horrors are a rare HK event - Ringo Lam's VICTIM and HORROR HOTLINE: BIG HEAD MONSTER are two reasonably recent entries that managed not to dilute the experience too much. NUDE FEAR was quite an effective psychological horror, and one of the many movies called FATAL LOVE (the 1993 one starring Ellen Chan) was really good too.

There's quite a lot of horror in the "Category III" department, the exploitation movies. ETERNAL EVIL OF ASIA, EROTIC GHOST STORY 2 are both fantasy horror. THE SEVENTH CURSE is an old but excellent horror/action movie.

THE UNTOLD STORY and DR. LAMB are considered classic sick-bastard horror movies, but take a bit of a stomach to watch.

Sci-Fi:

A genre that Hong Kong hardly ever touches, actually. There've been a couple of recent efforts like AVENGING FIST (which I liked a lot) and WESLEY'S MYSTERIOUS FILES (so bad it's fun). Some older ones include THE HEROIC TRIO (all time classic) and it's dark sequel EXECUTIONERS, SAVIOUR OF THE SOUL (moments of brilliance), BLACK MASK (not so great, but good action scenes). I don't know whether to class BLACK PANTHER WARRIORS as sci-fi or just fantasy, but it's a must see for sheer delirious invention. WICKED CITY is another sci-fi that makes up for low budget with insane imagination and ambition. Oh, and the recent supernatural movie 2002 feels kind of sci-fi and is very enjoyable.

Overall, Hong Kong's fantasy movies tend to look to the past for inspiration more than the future.

Action:

This is where Hong Kong is truly the world leader, so many examples I could never list them all, but some attempts:

Kung Fu:
DRUNKEN MASTER 2
FEARLESS HYENA
THE YOUNG MASTER
FIST OF LEGEND
THE VICTIM (1980)
WARRIORS TWO
PRODIGAL SON
THE BLADE
SHAOLIN vs. NINJA
SHAOLIN vs. LAMA
5 DEADLY VENOMS

80's Action (the peak period?)
ROYAL WARRIORS
MAGNIFICENT WARRIORS
POLICE STORY 1 & 2
PROJECT A 1 & 2
RIGHTING WRONGS
MILLIONAIRE'S EXPRESS
BLONDE FURY
THE GODFATHER'S DAUGHTER MAFIA BLUES

Wire Fu:
ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 1 & 2
IRON MONKEY
TAI CHI MASTER
BUTTERFLY & SWORD
KUNG FU CULT MASTER
FONG SAI YUK 1 & 2
THE ICEMAN COMETH

Fantasy Action:
ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND
ZU - WARRIORS OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN
SWORDSMAN 1 & 2
DRAGON INN (1992)
MR.

Comedy:

Most HK movies tend to add some comedy into the mix at some point or other - sometimes effectively, more often not. The "King Of Comedy" in HK is undoubtedly Stephen Chiau (Chow) though, who has an extensive filmography of mostly excellent movies, e.g.

SHAOLIN SOCCER
ROYAL TRAMP 1 & 2
FORBIDDEN CITY COP
KING OF COMEDY
GOD OF COOKERY
MAGNIFICENT SCOUNDRELS
FIST OF FURY 1991

Pretty much any movie directed by Wong Jing will have a mix of action and comedy (often offensive & very low brow) - an acquired taste, but perhaps Hong Kong's definitive movie maker

One last observation - since you're new, the best piece of advice anyone can give you is "import directly from Hong Kong". HK based etailers like www.dddhouse.com will charge you $5 - $10 US for most movies, rather than the $35 to $40 you'd pay for the exact same thing in Virgin or Tower Records etc.
