A very violent, dark and hilarious film. Based on the 1988 manga book series ''Riki Oh'' (King Of Strength) by Masahiko Takajo and Tetsuya Saruwatari, the film tells of Ricky Ho (played by Fan Siu Wong who closely resembles his comic book counterpart) who is a young man imprisoned for taking revenge on the one who caused the suicide of Ricky's girlfriend. He becomes a hero for his fellow prisoners, battling against the Gang Of Four, Cyclops and the Warden. The so-called ''hyper violence'' in this film is hilariously excessive as limbs are snapped like celery sticks, holes are punched through flesh, eyes are punched out of heads and guess what, there is more!!!!!! The most unbelievable scene in the film is where Hai, one of the members of the Gang Of Four tries to kill Ricky by cutting his stomach open and strangling Ricky to death with his own intestines!!!!! Don't worry, the gore in the film is so-in-your-face that you will end up laughing, this I can guarantee. Wimps need not bother with this one. There is also a reprisal of the infamous X-Ray skull punch as first seen in Shinichi ''Sonny'' Chiba's first hit ''The Streetfighter'' (Gekitotsu! Satsujin Ken) (1974) where the punch burrows through the head causing the skull to deform, shown in X-Ray format. In short, the film is chock-a-block of excessive bloodletting, exaggerated gore and comic book style violence/insanity. A film that puts ''Fist Of The North Star'' (1994) to shame. Don't get me wrong, the film was good but it has failed where ''Story Of Ricky'' has succeeded in the sense of over-the-top gore and mayhem. A must see for manga fans and gorehounds alike.

Love this film, it's great as long as you have a strong stomach. But it is comic book violence and will have you laughing more often than not. The gang of four are great characters and I wish we had seen even more of them. Top film.

i know there was a manga sequel with ricky hired by the government fighting against robots. However i was looking on a Hong Kong dvd website and found a film called The Boxing King or The Power King, im not sure which. Again it stars Fan Siu Wong and they said it was a sequel of some sorts. I think the synopsis was Fan stars as a martial arts champion out to defend his title, it didn't sound like a hyperbolic gore fest.

Anyone any more info on this? is it a ricky sequel? is it any good more importantly.

Fan Siu-wong was so pumped and primed in this movie, I'm surprised he wasn't able to build a bigger screen career on the back of it. I understand he's done a lot of television stuff which may have eluded western fans, and I know he has done a number of other films, but he never became a bona fide star in his own right. Still looks great in this outrageous movie, though - his defining moment as an actor!

The scene where he ties his sinews in his arm together so he can fight again is a classic (troma type) moment. The last fight scene was a little ridiculous though.

I wonder where I can get some eyeball mints?

Tokyo Shock has an excellent DVD on this with both dubbed and original language.

honestly, I think Nam Nai Choi's other movies may be lower on gore but Sventh Curse and The Cat are much, much more fun than Story Of Ricky. It's still fun but not as fun.

Fan Mei-sheng is the father of Fan Siu-wong. Haha, thats pretty cool actually come to think of it I think Story of Ricky is nothing but great fun though, just because it´s strong violence.

I have the Boxing King vcd with Cynthia Khan and I do not think it's a sequel to Story of Ricky. The gore doesn't even touch what's in Story of Ricky. And in my opinin, BK is not a very enjoyable movie although Terry Fan is great!

And the one about robots fighting, is that Robotrix with Amy Yip and David Wu?? That's the only robot film that comes to mind and no, it's not a sequel to Story of Ricki.
