2046 - In the Mood For Love

Postby JohnR » Thu Dec 01, 2005 5:32 pm

I've received my copy of 2046 and am eager to pop it into the tray, but I'm wondering whether it's advisable to watch ITMFL again first. Do I need to refresh myself, or is this more a sequel in name only?

You should definitely watch both ITMFL and DAYS OF BEING WILD first. 2046 references them constantly (in fact the only reason the film exists seems to be to say "Hey, remember those other films I made? Me too" :p)

Hey, not entirely fair Mr B given the final scene of Days.

Not sure if you've seen the book on WKW by Stephen Teo but I think it was here that I first read that Days was originally intended to be two films but due to poor box-office the second never happened .... well not for some time obviously.

Cheers

Yeah, not entirely fair ;) It felt to me like 2046 added nothing new in terms of theme or philosophy to the other 2 films though... just more of the same ideas, drawn out over pretty pictures but not actually saying anything. I didn't much like ITMFL either though :)

Sure there are "themes" but one can argue Wong Kar-wai is more "about" moods than "saying something". I think that one of the reasons I liked 2046 as much as I did is because it connects with the previous films but it's also something else. I didn't like ITMFL as much.
