Sneak peek at forthcoming Fortune Star DVDs for 2006

It's always hard to find anything pertaining to what Fortune Star have on their books for any given release year, let alone month, so it was with quite some delight I happened upon their initially announced restored & remastered titles for the Malaysian market in 2006!
Per usual, Fortune Star appear to be releasing their catalogue in outlying territories before their Hong Kong debuts, so it's nice to know in advance some of the surprises on their way...

Though there's a few titles there that have already seen the light of digital release in Hong Kong, I must say...it's quite promising to see news of brand new cleaned-up editions of PEACOCK KING, SAGA OF THE PHOENIX, DIARY OF A BIG MAN and TIGER ON THE BEAT heading our way this year (oh, and the early Stephen Chow opus WHEN FORTUNE SMILES too!). These are exactly the reasons I pay zero attention to what international companies like Hong Kong Legends and their ilk are doing -- new digital transfers from HD masters; sure, they're usually light on extras, but as I find myself usually only watching extras ONCE they're of negligible worth to me and these discs work out much more affordable for me at the AUD vs. HKD exchange rate.
Can't say I'm too thrilled to see Jackie's THE PROTECTOR having gone the HD route (even if the HK version is his cut of the film), but hey...sometimes you've gotta take the rough with the smooth (odds on FS will bundle it with my old fave CRIME STORY for HK release!). It'll be a joy to upgrade the Yuen Biao/Gloria Yip "Peacock" films from the old Media Asia prints when they hit HK shelves...
Happy reading!
