why widescreen?

It seems that most people nowadays want DVDs and VHS to come in widescreen or letterboxed format. I can understand wanting letterbox, but why would anyone want widescreen? (Unless everybody has a widescreen TV) My personal preference would be full-screen without losing picture. However, even those on full screen with pictures cut from all 4 sides and only 50% of the picture remaining on screen is better than widescreen. So I'm just wondering why so many people prefer WS.

I guess I forgot to ask something else. Does widescreen maintain all pictures, or does it simply cut out half of the picture on the top and bottom (replaced with black "thingies"?) I've noticed that WS movies seem to lost about 2/3 of their pics because WS only shows up on 1/3 of the screen. Also, I have a 19 inch TV, so I can just barely see anything on WS.

Thanks

very informative article. Perhaps I missed something, but wouldn't the easiest thing for everyone be to modify the size of our ordinary TV?

I have read that in the next 2 years there will be more WS televisions being made at smaller sizes. As opposed to the 40" & above that are now available. There will be some tv stations that will be sending there signal in WS format as well.
