I've been watching a lot of them recently. Here's my own b/w evolution: I started with Connie Chan, then Josephine Siao Fong Fong which led me to Cheung Ying Tsoi, to Cheung Ying, to Cheung Wood Yau and Ng Chor Fan, Mui Yee, Pak Yin, Wong Man Lei, to Sun Ma Sze Tsang/Hung Sin Nui and Ma Sze Tsang and on and on. And who ties them all together? Sai Gwa Pau !

Last night, I watched an 1948 romance/comedy, An Unruly Princess with Ma Sze Tsang and Hung Sin Nui (and Sai Gwa Pau).

It'll be on my next order from yesasia. My last order, I picked up about a dozen old b/w films including two Sun Ma Sze Tsangs, a Ma Sze Tsang, a Cheung Ying Tsoi and a Cheung Wood Yau/Pak Yin film and one based on Dream of the Red Chamber and some others which I haven't watched yet.

My Cantonese is suck too but I can follow about 75% of it. The drama and melodramas are easier to understand. The martial arts films are tougher. I never learned words like 'Invicible Flaming Palm Sword of Mt Emu' around the house as a kid.

I've seen clips of them. I'd to see some, but they're hard to get, and don't have subtitles (they'd be hard to read anyway). That was back when they didn't bother with them. I did see Bruce Lee's "The Orphan" at a film festival.

If you liked The Orphan or In The Face of Demolition, there is a Bruce Lee boxed set (w/Eng subs) that includes An Orphan's Tragedy,The Kid,The Guiding Light. An Orphan's Tragedy, Demolition, and Guiding Light were all made by Union Film which produced high quality, socially conscious films starting in 1953 through the early '60s.

For something that's quasi-gothic horror, check out Bloody Paper Man or A Mad Woman. For screwball comedy, there's Darling Girl/Sweet Heart with Bruce Lee briefly showing his dancing skills and Man Lan as a very sassy girl. For fantasy, try Big Clumsy Melon/The Big Gourd.
