Michael Biehn goes Hong Kong? DRAGON SQUAD. Cool...

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Tue Nov 15, 2005 5:34 am

Just clicked on that poster for DRAGON SQUAD on the main page and it looks like yet another "name" American actor has made the crossover to Hong Kong cinema. I realize Michael Biehn has been out of the spotlight for years now, but he's still a decent actor and seems like an intriguing addition to a halfways decent cast, including Sammo and Simon, together again after SPL! Hopefully, they'll use Biehn better than Benny Chan used Paul Rudd in GEN-Y COPS, but you gotta give these guys some credit for bringing a little gweilo class to casting opportunities usually filled by British martial artists who couldn't act to save their lives. Decent director on this one, too, so here's hoping!

Just noticed something. The chinese characters given for Biehn's name in the database don't seem to match those given on the posters. Or am I reading that wrong? His name on the posters seems to be three characters, and they don't seem to match what in the database. Just wondering...

It was my fault.

Foreign names can be written in different ways in chinese. I used the characters provided by several chinese sites announcing the movie several months ago, but it seems that finally they will use another chinese characters.

Changed.
Anyway you may note that the new characters are not exactly the same as the poster, but this is because the poster is written in simplified chinese (and our Db uses traditional chinese).

Appropriate Simon would mention Mr. Bean.

We have Vanness(a) Wu, Andy On, a gweilo ham...all in one movie...and to top it off Steven Seagal produced? Too bad Donnie Yen could get in on this one too.

What will be more funny? Watching it, or reading the sober fanboy reviews.

I'm watching it tomorrow night. I'll report back...

Hey, now, the last time Seagal worked with an actual Hong Kong director, Ching Siu-tung on BELLY OF THE BEAST, the results were one of the better pieces of Seagal's direct-to-video ouevre. I know that's not saying much, but it proves that at least once in a while, the man can still associate with some decent talent. And if nothing else, they say UNDER SIEGE 3 is in the pipeline...

So is DRAGON SQUAD already available on DVD?

Well, since I am seeing it at a friends place who claims he got it from mainland China, via a "legit" SF Chinatown vendor, I would say the answer is probably "no." :D

Well, I just saw it...and wow...was I surprised. Apart from it being gun and mayhem fetishism flick--which is what one certainly expects...this is a halfway decent movie...well...apart from having to endure 30 seconds of the lamentable Andy On (wherein he spends most of it crying).

And would you believe Biehn had a major role? And was terrific!

A little disappointed over the ending though...

I know Dragon Squad because of Michael Biehn, I'm living in HK but don't watch too much HK movie. Anyway, by watching the trailer, I was very looking forward to it. Finally, a little bit disppointment but still ok, well, it's full of action (I think the gun shot scenes can be better edited) but quite simple storyline. But as a Biehn fan, I am totally satisfied. :D So I watched it for the second times today. Strangely, I enjoyed it more than the first time. :o

Well, referring to the previous posts here, according to Michael Biehn fan club info, the US DVD release date should be sometime next year.

For Andy On, I haven't watched any of his movies before, but quite impressive to him in DS. How can a woman not be touched by watching him cried so sorrowfully for his dead girlfriend?

Thanks, Brian.

After Dragon Squad, Michael Biehn will have another movie with Daniel Lee and Bey Logan, really can't wait!

Bey Logan? Sigh. I guess the credits for this film in the Database still need filling out! What role did he serve? Oh well, I'm willing to overlook his lacklustre past endeavours (and his likely role in squiring SPL to the Weinstein company) if this is even as marginally entertaining as you folks say it is.[/url]
