Rickshaw Puller and Orphan

Rickshaw puller Cheh Cheng rescues a pregnant woman one night. While he is off seeking help, she disappears leaving the newborn baby in his rickshaw. He raises the baby as his own in the tenement rooming house. A few years later he and the little girl give Fung, now a prosperous opera singer, a ride after picking her up backstage. Soon enough, Fung figures out the girl is her daughter. Fung is also pursued by the oily Lau (Lau Hark Suen). Up to this point, pretty standard stuff of melodramas. In the second half, a little too unbelievably, Cheh Cheng fills in back stage and then performs onstage in a singing role. And then, the whole thing changes into another directon when a drug dealing plot is thrown in.

I found the first half focusing on the rooming house and its tenants with Cheh Cheng raising the little girl the more interesting part of the movie. After the opera scene, the picture looks like a different film and much more contemporary.

There are seven songs in the film, three by Sun Ma Sze Tsang and four duets with Tang Bik-Wan.
