Reviewed by: Stephe Date: 03/18/2016 Summary: There is a Motion Picture & General Investment Co. Ltd. version of this Motion Picture & General Investment Co. Ltd. filmed the same story and released it under the titles A Story of Three Loves (Part 1) (1964) and A Story of Three Loves (Part 2) (1964). Shaw Brothers' version was created by a raft of directors and features wonderful screen compositions and sumptuous mise-en-scène that MP & GI can't match. A Story of Three Loves' Grace Chang is a natural musical performer and fits her musicianly scenes whereas Between Tears and Laughter's Li Li-Hua is not on par. Likewise, the athletic Jeanette Lin Tsui is fine as the martial artist's daughter, while Ivy Ling Po's presence makes me wish that she was able to perform Li Li-Hua's numbers. Between Tears and Laughter's Guan Shan is immensely preferable as the heroic scholar to A Story of Three Loves' rather drippy Zhao Lei. The source material for both films was the novel Fate in Tears in Laughter (Tixiao yinyuan) by Zyhang Henshui. Reviewer Score: 7
