The Contract

Summary: Good

With the exception of Security Unlimited, this was the last truly originally funny Hui brothers film. The Contract was based around music and TV, and of course was set in the same comedy pitch as their previous films. To me, this was nothing near as good as their first few, but certainly very funny all the same. There is a very amusing 'glue' joke which I still love even today! I think the real problem with this one though, was the story…or lack of, which is the case here.

Any fans of the Hui brothers who still haven’t seen this, I would suggest it’s worth the view. I’m not sure if most other people would still find these old films funny though. I grew up on films by people like the Hui brothers, so to me I will always like them, and original jokes are plenty in them.

Summary: Not as Strong as the Private Eyes

This comedy is not as well-realized as the THE PRIVATE EYES, mainly because the opportunity to satirize the TV industry is mostly wasted. Many of the jokes are not developed to the fullest. even the performances are a little off; Michael's characterization as the aspiring TV actor is not as strong as his other roles. He lacks the acerbic quality that he has in other roles. Sam also seems a bit lost as the magician. Ricky does well, but his role is slight. The relationship between the characters is also too mechanical. The brightest spots in the film are the dead-on parodies of the TV studio and the songs which are all fantastic. The most inspired gag in the film is the bit where Michael hosts a game ala LET'S MAKE A DEAL where the contestant bets with her husband's life!
