Reviewed by: Tonic Date: 04/03/2008 Quite touching in places, especially the moment Fat Cat's mother dies in the hospital. The subject matter reminded me of 'The Lunatics (1986)' - well the other way round if I had seen this film first. Chow Yun Fat essentially serves as bookends to the movie - he's just there to bring the punters in. That's not slating him; as usual he's good. Similarly (with regards to punters) there are several gags that just fail badly in the context. Well recommended. Another rare-gem from Cinema City.

THis story is still rare in HK movie making, not many people attempt to make movies like this. Very good. The sequel (Nowhere Man aka Beloved Son Of God) is better though. Rating: 3/5 (This rating is based on the year & genre, so don't think it's based as a comparison on new releases etc.)

Reviewed by: TequilaYuen Date: 06/11/2000 Summary: Bought it for Chow Yun Fat, Stayed For Kent Cheung This film was indeed a suprise. It came with my lot of CYF dvd's. I was wary of this one, Chow looks very young on the cover and his hair looks from the late seventies, but he looked ok in the film. The real focus of this film however, is Kent Cheung. He is amazing as a mentally retarded man living in a HK villa with his mother. He is a good son, and is still harassed by local thugs. He is brought some help by a social worker who wants to get Cheung (named 'Fat Cat') and his mother some help. They live so modestly, and cause the social worker to question her own life, and familyproblems. I would hate to give away what happens, but i'll just say that Fat Cats mom is severely ill, the bullies do not stop, and there are many parts of the film which could bring tears from a stone! Chow yun fat also has a very pivitol role asthe film progresses (which worried me in the beginning). My only hangup about this film was the apperance of Eric Tsang (my new Hk enemy, he is So annoying in every film he is in that he almost brings each one to a standstill!). All in all, very worth the viewing. Kent Cheung won the Hk best actor award for his performance, and deservedly so! He was also the director, and many of the shot setups, camera angles and set decor is amazing! I'd take this film over a million 'Forrest Gumps', this film is so simple, and in that says so much more!

Reviewed by: wrlouis Date: 12/09/1999 A novice social worker (Olivia Cheng Man-Ar) tries to help out amentally-retarded man "Fat Cat", played superbly by Kent Cheng Juk-Si. The movie's overt focus is the failure of the social system, and of society, to deal fairly with the mentally ill: Fat Cat's mother is ignorant, though well-meaning, the welfare system is overburdened, and the other villagers misinformed and malicious. Kent Cheng is brilliant throughout, and the tragic ending to this movie would wring tears from a stone. On the other hand, the cheesy romance between CYF & Olivia Cheng comes across as an afterthought (as does the grotesque ending-after-the- ending that was obviously tacked on to the script to lighten things up). Most notably, the movie is burdened by a huge number of subplots concerning family, evil triad punks, and other whatnots: the social worker's family is itself dysfunctional, etc etc. In short, _Why Me?_ is half brilliant social commentary and half cheesy melodrama -- with a sprinkling of silly comedy thrown in. But Kent Cheng stands out in every scene -- he clearly deserved his HKFA Best Actor award for this movie.
