Summary: A fun ghost story with staple Lam Ching-Ying...

The second collaboration (the first being Spooky Family) between Kent Cheng and Pauline Wong as husband and wife dealing with the undead, Spiritual Trinity is an enjoyable ghost story with a quality cast and some good action. Tien Kuei (Kent Cheng) and Mun (Pauline Wong), along with their son Yuen Kao (Gam Sap-Yee) run a general store in China. Unwittingly, a ghost (Bonnie Fu) becomes trapped in their well and then befriends their son, soon after becoming a sort of post-sunset maid for the family. meanwhile, a traveling father and daughter ghost-hunting duo arrives in town having caught a powerful demon. It turns out the father (Lam Ching-Ying) is Tien Kuei’s brother, and a long-festering rivalry starts up again when they extend their stay. Kuei (Kent) and Tien Lung (Lam) were both in love with Mun as young men, and their Taoist master sent her with Kuei, thinking that he would protect her the best. A question of Yuen Kao’s paternity comes up as well, all while the family is trying to protect their ghost from being discovered and captured by Lung. Unfortunately, all hell breaks loose when the captured demon is accidentally let loose in their store.

All the actors in this film are very good, and it raises the level of what might have been a somewhat mediocre, formulaic movie. The comedy works well, along with some quality action pieces and an excellent drunken sword form from Lam Ching-Ying. Pauline Wong and Gigi Lai are both gorgeous and add eye-candy on top of good comedic scenes. Overall, a good ghost genre film that is certainly not a waste of time to check out.

Enjoyable flick with a good mixture of supernatural effects, action, comedy and family drama. Good characters and cinematography make up for the lack of much of much else.

The Winson DVD is indeed dreadful though, though at least it features subtitles for 95% of the dialogue, unlike the subtitle-free VCD.

A sequel of sorts to the superior film Spooky Family, this Jeff Lau ghost/vampire comedy once again features Kent Cheng and Pauline Wong as husband and wife. While in the first movie, Pauline had reason to be jealous about Kent's affections for colleague sister Nina Li, this time around the situation is reversed: her old flame Lam Ching Ying suddenly arrives with daughter Gigi Lai in tow - and now it's Kent's turn to be jealous. Further trouble arises through the appearance of the vicious "red jacket ghost" as well as LCY's hostile reaction to the friendly female ghost that is part of Kent's household.

The movie alternates between supernatural taoist rituals, well-choreographed fight scenes between the humans and the evil supernatural beings, and silly slapstick comedy. The latter is not as sharp and as funny as in Spooky Family, nor is the action choreography as inspired, but the film still offers some highly entertaining hijinx, and in any case, LCY fighting the undead is always worth watching in my book. With a little more focus on the supernatural side of things, and less focus on the comedic household antics, teh movie could have been even better. I'd say, if you enjoy the genre, you'll have a decent enough time watching this film.

The Winson DVD is an atrocity, though. Fullscreen, horrible English subtitles (with a lot of dialog not translated at all - it sometimes seems they only bother to provide subs for those parts of the dialog that were essential for the story) and worst of all, the Cantonese soundtrack goes missing for a full chapter in the middle of the movie and I had to switch to the Mandarin soundtrack...

Kent Cheng and Pauline Wong allow their son to take in a friendlyfemale ghost he has fallen in love with, but trouble arises when strict Taoist Lam Ching-Ying, who was once a fellow pupil of Kent Cheng's master and was also a former flame of Pauline, comes to stay with the family. A little silly, but decent entertaiment.
