Summary: More crap from those Gen-X Kids, with the exception of Nicholas Tse!!!

Under-appreciated and unhappy Match (played by Stephen Fung from ‘The Haunted Office’, ‘Cheap Killers’ and ‘Women from Mars’) and Alien (played by Sam Lee from ‘Fist Power’, ‘Crazy N’ the City’ and ‘Bio-Cops’) regroup once again in the awful and disappointing ‘Gen-Y-Cops’. When the latest US robot RX-1 goes on a killing rampage, following hacking into the main system by the irate and suspended software engineer Kurt (played by newcomer Richard Sun), who self-obsessively blames the US Government for shutting him out from his creation. Kurt plans to hijack RX-1 and sell it on the black-market to the highest bidder. As part of his grand get-rich quick plan he enlists his unwitting friend and undercover policeman, Edison (played by Edison Chan from other roles in ‘Moving Targets’ and ‘Infernal Affairs’), who has recently been partnered up with Match and Alien via drugging and controlling his motives (so as to speak). Following the hijacking of RX-1, the FBI agents are chasing Edison as well as Match and Alien who become embroiled as prime culprits of a conspiracy to steal US government property. The FBI led (in partnership with his superior and trainer Mark Hicks) by a maverick blonde hunk, Paul Rudd (also a newcomer) is in no mood to negotiate and with his agents seems to be targeting everyone as prime suspects whilst a Chinese-American employee, Jane (played by Maggie Q from ‘Naked Weapon’, ‘Around the World in 80 days’ and ‘Rush Hour 2’) gets caught up in this game of wits and deceit. A co-ordinating officer (played by Christy Chung from ‘Red Wolf’ and ‘Tai Chi 2’) also makes up the cast of characters.

The plot is non-existent with a minor twist and a few sub-plots. This movie is a comedic youthful action-thriller with a low budget (surprising considering the big names and international actors involved). The acting is also quite bad with non-existent character-development and appears scattered with no real focus. Unfortunately, there is not one good thing that can be said about this movie besides some of the half-decent action that occurs in small doses (excluding the lame special-effects). No police or FBI procedures figure in this movie and their working practice looks chaotic at best, Edison Chan and Stephen are carrying baggage, make coffee and waving Chinese welcoming flags for the newly arrived FBI agents for some reason (where were the personal assistants and so on?). Furthermore, it is not clear whether Christy Chung or Maggie Q is the female lead (similar to male lead and main villain)!

Maggie Q should have stayed in modelling instead of trying to spread her wings as a charismatic and innocent actor and her role as an FBI agent is not convincing since she seems to be lost most of the time and not respected by her US counterparts at all. Furthermore, Christy Chung’s presence is supplementary as always and confirms that she is supposed to purely serve the purpose of eye candy along with Maggie Q of course. No explanation is offered for the absence of Nicholas Tse or other changes in circumstances from the first part (since besides the inclusion of Stephen Fung and Sam Lee there is no resemblance) and an unreasonable and less authoritative Edison Chan takes his place as a renegade police officer. Another obvious flaw is that the maverick American FBI agent is always speaking in English throughout the movie and clears appears to not be able to comprehend or converse in Cantonese, then why does he utter a few Chinese words at the end after a few days visit since he seems to be a detestable over-dedicated workaholic and never takes an interest in common talk!

This movie tries to mix languages similar to its predecessor by being a bi-lingual feature this time around and Richard Sun is so bad at speaking (in an Afro-American street-gang culture accent) that his role as a gifted software engineer is always questioned as well as where he picked up his English from! The tension between the American FBI and Chinese Police is childish since this issue dominates most of their difficulties in capturing the RX-1 robot. Also, the design of the RX-1 and various other robots under development by Anthony Wong is so crap that dust-bins look more technologically advanced. Furthermore, an experienced and talented actor such Anthony Wong is demeaned by being a side role. The real problem with this movie is that there is no convincing hero or main villain (supposed to be Edison Chan/Stephen Fung and Richard Sun/Mark Hicks respectively) in this feature. Benny Chan clearly seems to be trying to make an improved sequel with a reasonable few changes to his previous outing with an unknown action-director (Lee Chung-Chi) and a smaller budget, but none of this pays off!

Overall, Gen-Y-Cops is no doubt worse than Gen-X-Cops as with most other trashy sequels produced to-date. However, where this production succeeds in putting such, still respectable, follow-ups to shame are its lack of coherence, meagre budget, wasted experience and talent and lame excuse for a movie. Let’s truly hope that they do not decide to make Gen-Z-Cops.

This movie is utter BS.

Firstly, Nicholas Tse is not present, so how can they do a sequel to Gen-X cops? Ok, fine, maybe they had to move on, but why not even a mention to what happened to him and Y2K (Grace Yip)?

Secondly, no way can Edison Chen act. I may be pissed about Nicholas Tse being missing, but putting Edison in his place was a total mistake. This dude cannot act to save his life. I know Nicholas may not be great, if not good, but certainly better than this guy.

The cast speaks terrible English, using slang that has no meaning or relation to the story. Basically, they're all "wannabe" Americans - there is no background for their use of language.

The thing about robots is gay - I don't know why they chose that as the main plot.

Maggie Q is just this slut that happens to be in the movie, and Rachel is nothing special - what happened to Haze (Match's girlfriend in Gen-X)?

The only thing that made the movie better was Alien and Match. They were great. Especially Alien - his attempts at english and his coffee/tea thing. The password thing at the beginning was funny too.

It was great how they had some cool cameo appearances.

But really, this movie was crap. This is not even a movie that teenagers would like, because the Edison dude is so annoying. He has an ego that is too big, and that smirk...yeuch.

Summary: whats up with the dialogue??

all this movie really had was a lot of shooting (terrorist robot, what do u expect?), eye candy (stephen, edison, maggie, that oli girl, paul rudd, etc) and poorly written English slang (what up dog? hey my man! u on crack? etc..even the middle eastern terrorist guys acted like they were in a rap music video)if they're gonna make an HK movie filled with English at least make the actors speak in STANDARD, CORRECT English~

i cant say Gen-X Cops was any masterpiece, but compared to the sequel, is a whole lot better in many ways. First, it focused more on the 3 unconventional COPS hence, the movie title, second, the villians in Gen-X were more intelligent (Akatora) and also fun to watch (Daniel), third it was funnier in dialogue and physical comedy, and fourth it felt "finished". Gen-Y left me feeling really empty at the end..in Gen-X the guys were arrested (i think?) but in Gen-Y they went out for drinks w/the American FBI agent? OK, talk about overly unrealistic, even for HK movies..
i kno this question's been asked a lot, but why did they not mention one thing about Y2K or Jack?? if ur gonna watch this movie, u should watch Gen-X first because Gen-Y provides no background info about Match or Alien at all..and speakin of Alien, he was quite hilarious..a bit weird and annoying but his attempts at speakin English were amusing (strange how he spoke 10x more English than Stephen in the movie) it was disappointing that Alien and Match were the supporting characters while Edison hogged the spotlight..i like Eddie but really, he didn't do that good of a job~

if Gen-Z Cops is really going to be made, PLEASE GET A LEAD ACTOR THAN CAN ACT! and its pretty stupid that the girls in the movie basically do nothing but look pretty~and how did Jane change into that fishnet shirt leather pants number the next morning when just the nite b4 Edison carried her off into the van threatening to blow her head off?

what more can i saw for this not-even-worth-renting-shame-to-the-whole-HK-film-industry movie?

i give it a 2 out of 10 at the highest

What was up with this HK offering?
J-U-M-B-O... the only thing jumbo about this movie is what a flop it was. Let's start with the lead actor, Edison Chan, its bad enough that Nic Tse wasn't in this movie but to replace Nic's character with someone who thought he just came straight out of the ghetto is a horrendous idea. Edison's ego is to huge for even this movie to contain. With a huge budget and some of the worst special effects I have ever seen it makes this movie seem all the worse. Richard Sun shouldn't quit his day job, heck I'd like to know how he managed to get a job with MTV. Anyways, like edison, he too tried to act ghetto. it was good for a laugh if that was what they were aiming for. Stephen Fung, and Christy Chung gave decent performances. Sam Lee was way too over the top. I wonder what he was smoking before he shot the movie. Maggie Q and Rachel Ngan are the eye candy, and they aren't to shabby, they gave quite enjoyable performances. The storyline was garbage, it was probably a paper written by some kids in the bronx and unknowingly picked up by some screen writers, and for the love of god, can we stop having actors in CHINESE movies stop speaking english, if I wanted to see an english speaking movie, I would go see a movie not made in HK. If this is the future of HK cinema, we can certainly come to the conclusion that it is certainly doomed

Summary: Twice as big, half as smart

"Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" stands as one of the best examples of the way Hollywood approaches sequels: Find out what worked in the first movie (likely, what test audiences report that they liked the most) and then make sure that these moments/scenes/bits are the primary focus of the sequel. So where in "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" we get the brief and hilarious (and almost throwaway) "nude" scene, in "AP:TSWSM" we get a whole musical number/title sequence based on it. And even if it works the second time, I wouldn't try for a third. But then, I'm just some guy with a Web site, while Michael Myers is a multimillionaire filmmaker comedian.

The producers of Gen-Y Cops, in their zeal to emulate Hollywood filmmaking, have followed the Austin Powers Sequel Strategy to the letter: take what worked in "Gen-X Cops" (Match, Alien, stuff blowing up) and up the voltage. So "Gen-Y Cops" is twice as loud and twice as silly as GXC—but only half as smart. It's a sort of twisted HK remake of Charlie's Angels. Again with the filmic inbreeding.

But still... I enjoyed the hell out of it. Stephen Fung is undeniably charismatic. He and Paul Rudd are the best actors in the movie. Anthony Wong's bit part is a treat. The hyperkinetic and usually entertaining Sam Lee overdoes the mugging a bit (what else is new?), and although the airport flag-waving scene and her sickeningly sweet cheerleading were hilarious, Christy Chung is criminally underused and overdressed. And don't get me started on "hot new thing" Edison Chen and his "Abonics." Can anyone explain why suburban Asian kids want to talk like they're gangsta rappers?

"Gen-X Cops" offered perhaps a passing nod to reality, but of course its sequel disposes of such trivial constraints. Almost immediately we know that all the rules of reality are out the window: Most live-fire military weapons tests take place at a remote desert range, far from civilization and things that break, not inside a metal and glass building. But hey, it's more Hollywood than HK, so just shrug and let your brain take a short vacation.
Sci-Fi Channel recently released a butchered version of this movie retitled "Jackie Chan's Metal Mayhem." Because it's mostly in English anyway, it was minimally dubbed, but aside from finding where the censors missed some obvious English curse words, that version's not really worth the time.

Summary: CAN SOMEONE SAY CHEEZE!!!!!!!!

Alright, I know this movie is old. I actually have it on VCD and have watched many times (I think Edison is the cutest!) and everytime I watched I come off with the same thought: WTF did I wasted my time with this? I finally decided to share my pain with you guys :)

Here is the problem. I love Gen-X Cops. It's actually my favorite HK movie. Now, Gen-Y Cops started bad as it didn't featured my favorite two characters from the first movie: Jack and Y2K. Not only were they not featured: THE CHARACTERS WERE NOT EVEN MENTIONED!! What kind of sequel is that? Now, the main lead is played by Edison Chen.

And I have to pause here. I do think Edison is cute (alright HOT!) but HIS ACTING SUCKS! He played a cop/canadian/ganstarapper who should have been the robot since the guy spends most of the movie with the same blank expression on his face! I know it was his acting debut, but shouldn't he have started with something with less screen time? Hey, I am a better actress than him, but I'm still doing community theater! Is not fair! The advantages given to beautiful/rich people in general are ludicrous...

Got off track there. Alright, as if Edison's acting wasn't bad enough, we have Richard Sun as Kurt, the hacker/ganstarapper who dresses like a pimp! All of the movie has cheesy lines, but his LINES WERE THE CHEESIEST! It stank...

Now, to the females: eyecandy! Nothing more, nothing less. They are both beautiful, and completely superficial. And the clothing! What kind of FBI agent dresses like Jane (Maggie Q)! I'll tell you: a fired FBI agent.
At least Y2K not only helped the guys but got a piece of the action herself!

Okay, now for the REALLY BAD PART: THE DIALOGUE! THE STORY! It was taken right of a Power Ranges episode! The dialogue was the cheesiest dialogue that has even run on my TV! Specially the english! Some of my favorite lines were:
"Wanna know the real reason why I didn't kill you in my dream? I ran out of bullets, baby!" "You on crack?" "Edison told me he was hypnotized" WTF IS THAT? If the robot storyline wasn't bad enough, Edison was hipnotized using a computer! And the HKPD had the equipment to trace that hypnosis right in the building! Horray for HKPD as they obviously are the most hi-tech police department in the WORLD!

The only saving Grace the movie has are Stephen Fung (Match), Sam Lee(Alien), and Paul Rudd (FBI Agent Ian Curtis). Their acting was fairly good, although Alien and Match were greatly underused.

There are rumors about another sequel (Gen-Z... wonder if the cops will be in diapers now). Please, Mr. Benny Chan, bring back Jack and Y2K (or at least mention them), please give acting classes to your main characters, and please don't let a 10 year old make the scripts this time. PLZ!

I can assure you not only the movie will be better, it could also do good internationally (believe me I'm a latino and Gen-X is one of my faves!)

Fun movie. Not really a sequel to GenX cops (although some of the same characters used). Actually liked it almost better than the predecessor, because the movie takes itself less seriously. Sam Lee is hilarious throughout.

That being said, this movie is also sympotamtic of the Hollywoodization of HK action movies - most of the dialogue is in English, and based on the dialogue used, it seems North Americans only talk in HipHop speak. There's hardly a normal English sentence spoken - everything is of the "Yo, chill out, man" variety.

The story, as far as there is one, deals with a Robocop type robot being stolen and generally wreaking havoc, with the so-called GenY Cops trying to get it back and save HK from evil. The premise was quite similar to Robotrix (ah, the yipster...) but just on a much larger budget. The action scenes are ok. Nothing breathtaking, but decently done.

Summary: Very stylish, Sam Lee very funny

On the whole I'd say this movie is very stylish & cool.

I lot of people critisise the amount of English, but I think it's ok cuz they were talking to Americans most of the time (you expect them to know Cantonese?), and Alien plays a lot of icq. Anyway, it's quite common to mix chinese & english in conversation.

One BIG letdown, stupid robot! OK idea, but it's really badly done (in the magazines they say that they got americans in especially to make the computer-made robot!?!?!) I think they got school kids to do it cuz it looks awful. The graphics from Aaron & Ekin's Fong Wan are much better, and that's maybe 3 years old.

The girls were just in the movie to look pretty (which they did very well), and Christy Chung had some funny lines, but that's all.

I think there's a bit of local humour here that maybe the reviewers from overseas didn't understand, but it's not so noticable as other HK movies.

Overall very stylish & funny. Didn't like kurt but the rest of the movie is cool. Also the black FBI guy's fighting is noticably good, I like his character most out of FBIs.

If the white guy is so racist to HK people, how come he knows Cantonese?

I think that Nic Tse replacement, Edison Chan does a great job. But Sam Lee who plays Alien is as annoying as ever. Whilst there are some laughs in the joke cracking department his constant screaming and yelling is nothing short of irratating. The main villain in the film also overdoes it and a lot of the american actors just sucks. A lot of the dialogue is delivered in english and just doesn't sound convincing.

Only Match and Alien return for the sequel, without any explanation as to where all the other characters went. Looks like Alien has learned some VERY broken english for the sequel. The villain in this movie is an extremely horrible actor who talks as if there's an exclamation mark after each and every sentence. The only thing that could possibly be worst than his acting is the surprise plot twist near the ending of this movie that make absolutely no sense at all. (I won't give this away to anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet, but I think those who have seen it know what I'm talking about.)

The robot in the movie which is suppose to be the highlight of the movie doesn't live up to expectations. It was supposedly built by the same people who did the robot effects for Terminator 2. However, it looks like they didn't put any effort into it at all. It looks like all they did was take a left over endoskeleton from T2, put some armor on it, and then gave it Robocop's legs.
On the bright side, the CG for the robot is half decent, but all other CG was absolutely horrific.
Overall, the movie is a fun watch if you lower your expectaions and don't take it too seriously.

Summary: Like the 1st one but not as good.

Having seen the first movie it was tempting to find out how this will follow on. Well, it doesn't. Apart from the return of the main characters played by Stephen Fung (Match) and Sam Lee (Alien), everything else is new. As most would've noticed the heart throb Nicholas Tse is absent from the film, his 'head role' seems to have been replaced by the teen idol Edison Chan, just to satisfy the teenage girls.

The film starts with the testing of a robot RS1 in the FBI headquarter, but it went out control as the original creator (Kurt) hacked into it. As the robot was showcased in Hong Kong, the computer whizkid hypnotized his old friend (Edison)into stealing the robot. Having been arrested by the FBI, it is up to Match and Alien to track it down.

The acting in overall is not brilliant as expected, Edison's not to say is lack of any expression. The Jane played by Maggie Q was just there to attract male audience, as she played very little part (as much as the costume at one time) in the story line. To much of my dissappointment, was Oli, played by Rachel Ngan. Seeing that she was on the film poster alongside with the main characters, her part in the story line is near zero.

Good thing is that even though the storyline is very straight forward, there are plenty of action through out the film, with the mix of comedy (some not so funny, but cheesy) may keep the audience entertained, for a bit. Suprisingly the CGI used in the film is very good for HK standard, although still way below Hollywood's standard, the animation is quite smooth. The design of the robot was a bit bland though.

One thing which really annoys people is the used of English dialogue. There is nothing wrong with it but the exaggerated American accented English used is absolutely CHEESY, bland (Yeah Maaaan, Awrite!)and non essential.

In overall not a good film and boringly directed, there's nothing special to intrigue hard viewers. Visually satisfying, but only just. There's no climax building up to the storyline and there's too many characters, the film is just too bland. For similar titles Gen X cops and Tokyo Raiders are preferable. Yeah Maaaaan!!. 2.5/5

I didn't like RoboCop so I didn't dig Gen-Y Cops. Can you just smell the cheese? IT's HELLA CHEESY! Let's start with the main actor, Edison. Wat up witcha tryin to floss shits likes "Ballin". For those who did not understand the previous sentence, that's probably how you felt when Edison was trying to show off his "ghetto" phrases to the audience when he was talking to Kurt. Please Edison, you are not hard enough to pull that off (even Coolio could not pull that off in China Strike Force). Especially for that role. I'd understand if you were playing like a chinese kid who was found in Compton and raised by African Americans and went back to Hong Kong...then maybe you can try using that dialogue.

Next Sam and Stephen were so under-used in this sequel. Too bad that couldn't get Jaymee Ong to continue Match and Haze's story. The most surprising role that I enjoyed was by Christy Chung. She was hilarious. As for the regular non-chinese actors, please leave Hong Kong immediately. We don't need B-rated american actors to contribute to the already struggling Hong Kong - wanting respect from Hollywood - Movie Industry. I mean big deal if Paul Rudd was in clueless and Romeo and Juliet. He absolutely sucked.

Next up is Maggie Q. Not all that...however she did okay. Overall the movie is full of cheese...doesn't have as good of a story as Gen-X cops. The robot concept was lame and played out. Here's my recommendation...I would rather watch Gen-X cops 100 times to Gen-Y cops 1 time.

Most overrated movie in a long time. With preposterous overacting and British-accents, shabby special effects, awful actions (complimented by Power Ranger-esque shaky camera movements) and awful script which is a given. Okay enough about Gladiator, let's talk about Gen-Y Cops now. I can't believe the same people who brought us taoism, compass and herbal medicine made this movie. This movie is bad. If you don't believe me, read all the other reviews posted here--except for the ones that liked the movie, 'cause those people apparently don't know what they're talking about. (Any reviewer who thinks a movie with lines like "you know the real reason I couldn't kill you in my dream? I ran out of bullets, BABY!" or plotlines involving killer robots AND a double-cross involving eye-hypnosis is clueless. Any reviewer likes a movie for Maggie Q is clueless and horny.) Okay, the actions. Wirefus are cool, but not when every move is a WWF dropkick (No exaggeration, every kick is a dramatized leap in the air with, wow! both legs!) The robot talks like R2-D2 and walks like Al Gore. This movie is so bad I get pissed when reading anything positive about it.

Summary: Garbage

Sometimes I just don't understand why Hong Kong filmmakers are always seems so intent on emulating western culture. The occasional English slip here or there is bearable in most HK flicks, but Gen Y Cops magnifies that tenfold. The result? A script composed of nearly 60-70% english dialogue, piss-poor acting, (catalyzed by the presence of Edison Chan), a ridiculous plot, yawn-inducing action sequences, and laughable special effects to boot. The latter is a major dissapointment, seeing as how the visual-bravura of this movie has been one of its most touted aspects. The RS1 robot looked like it was pulled out a young boy's toybox and filmed with a Logitech webcam. The fact that some people actually enjoyed this film is simply beyond me.

The main problem I had with this movie was with Edison. This guy has absolutely no talent whatsoever - he's just a pretty boy who apparently thought he was sooo cool that he could use his real name for his character. If it wasn't for his fanbase consisting of 100% little girls, he would be forgotten in an instant.

Gen-Y-Cops sucks. This movie was worse than Battlefield: Earth, Saving Silverman, Highlander: Endgame, and Mission Impossible II combined. The only "saving grace" this movie had - if you want to feel nice enough calling it that - was its mediocre soundtrack.

You know you have a problem on your hands when you call the best aspect of a movie mediocre.

Summary: Gen Y Cops

When I got this film back home I really did't expect to like it, because of all the reviews I read. But I have to say that it a really fun and enjoyable film to watch, much better, well funnier that 'Gen X Cop'. Anyway the only bad thing I can say about this film is that it to much English dialogue, {which I personally did't mind} and one more thing what happen to the two characters from 'Gen X Cops', 'Jack' and Y2K?

There are a lot of great cameos as well, including Anthony Wong and Eric Kot as two designer/scientist from good old China, Vincent Kok also a designer but from Hong Kong, Lee Lik-Chi as a very annoy but funny taxi driver and Cheung Tat-Ming as loster man, yes I did say loster man. {you have to watch the film to see it}

I heard that soon there will be making
'Gen Z Cops', which sees 'Jack' from
'X' and 'Edison' from 'Y' teaming up, if its true I hope to see the rest of the 'X' and 'Y' cops 'Stephen Fung' and 'Sam Lee' they are very funny at times {when Sam Lee trying to speak/learn to speak English}.
Oh, and of cause all the other beautful ladies;

Maggie Q---Jane {a very sexy FBI that can kick some butts, I wish all female FBI/police dress like her}.

Christy Chung---Inspector Chung {oh my god, why can't my boss look like her}

Sophie Ngan---Oli {a computer nerd that have the looks and body that can kill any men}

Grace Yip {who played Y2K from 'Gen X Cops' is another gorgeous computer nerd with the cutest face}.

Jaymee Ong {who played Haze in 'Gen X Cops' don't you just wish she was your girlfriend}.

By the way I'm not Zoe, I'm just using her name to write this review.
Just incase you though that Zoe was writing all that stuff about the

Summary: Enjoyable Flick!!!

If you hate these Mod Squad/youth rebellion flicks then don't watch this movie but if you are in the mood for good mindless entertainment then this is the movie to watch.
As far as I can tell 2000 has been a good year for Hong Kong flicks. Tsui Hark made his return with Time and Tide(one of the reasons Nicholas Tse is not in Gen-Y Cops), Aaron Kwok is making his name in the action flick business with 2000 AD and China Strike Force. Wong Kar-Wai has a film finally in wide release theatrically in the US with In the Mood for Love. And lets not forget the awesome Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon although funded by Americans with a Taiwanese director, it features the coolest actor in the world(who happens to be from Hong Kong), Chow Yun-Fat(Zhou Ren Fa for all you mandarin speakers). There was also the enjoyable Tokyo Raiders which had the privelage of being the biggest grossing flick of 2000 in the former pearl of the British Empire.
Now how does Gen-Y Cops fit in to all this? Well, it signals the international appeal that Hong Kong films are generating and developing. It is in 90% English and even features two legit American actors in Paul Rudd and that stunt man guy who doubled for Michael Jae White in Spawn. The movie purposely cast actors with competent English like Maggie Q, Kristy Chung and Edison Chan because there is a goal to release this flick internationally. Now, should it be released internationally? The answer is: maybe. The original Hong Kong version of this movie will probably not be released Stateside.

For starters, with exception to Paul Rudd and a few others, the English dialogue in this movie is completely atrocious. Edison Chan, the replacement for Nicholas Tse, talks in a pretentious pseudo ghetto/Canadian accent. Considering that Chan is from Toronto the accent is going to stick but he didn't have to add a bunch of pathetic phrases like "what up yo?" and "What you talking about dog?" because he sounds like a complete moron. He really lacks the charisma of Nicholas Tse and the absence of the Hong Kong pop star is really felt. The other Caucasian actors aren't that good either. So with the bad English dialogue alone, Gen-Y Cops is pretty un-releasable in its uncut format. Probably they will release a cut version with most of the bad English either dubbed over or cut entirely from the film(drastically cutting it down from its 1hr 53 minute length).

However, there is a lot to like about this movie. For starters Gen-X Cops alumni, Stephen Fung and Sam Lee are back and better than ever. Both are hilarious as the defiant cops. Sam Lee throughout tries to mutter English slang but it is deliberately funny when he completely fails. The Cantonese speakers of this movie are definitely a plus. The only problem is the wardrobe for these two looks like they were stolen from a 70's porn film! Also Edison Chan is good when he is speaking Cantonese with Fung and Lee.

Like I mentioned before, Paul Rudd is very good, making his action movie debut. I haven't seen any of his other movies but here his charisma is very apparent. He also has good chemistry with the Hong Kong stars which really helps the film flow.

The main reason I like this movie though is the direction of Benny Chan. This guy has turned out a lot of good movies. He directed probably Jackie Chan's best post-Drunken Master II flick, Who Am I, and Gen-X Cops, a highly enjoyable flick. In this picture he takes the budget he was given and tries to do everything he can with it. I hope that he will make at least one Hollywood effort, then again, maybe not because they will suck him dry like they did to other great directors Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam(even John Woo didn't get away clean). The steadicam work is just as good as any Hollywood effort and the special effects are as good as they are going to get outside of Hollywood.

Gen-Y Cops is not as good as its predecessor, Gen-X Cops but it doesn't fail to entertain. If you want to see the uncut version of this buy the Hong Kong original on DVD or VCD and don't wait for Columbia, Miramax or New Line to butcher it!! Some of the English may stink but it is watchable. The good far outweighs the bad.

The script was written very poorly, and the special effects, one of the most touted aspects of this film, looked like they were created in someone's garage using Microsoft Paint.
Match and Alien were about the only ones who is worth watching, but even they couldn't save the film. The hype for this film film was over the top and it all because of the newcomer 'Edison Chan' who can't even act, Definetly NOT recommended by me, but if your one of those SAD people that just watches the film because someone you like is starring in it {Edison Chan} then you might like it, as for me, I hate this film and Edison Chan.

Summary: Surprisingly fun.

My expectations for this were rock-bottom. The first movie was mediocre, and now a giant robot is thrown into the mix?... It sounded disastrous.

Many parts of the movie unfortunately are. Richard Sun and Edison Chan's dialogue and acting, mostly in English, are terrible; their scenes together grate on the nerves. All the female roles are filled with irritating actresses like Christy Chung or amateur acttress-models like Maggie Q. None of them have anything to do but take up space.

Even the "Gen-Y" cops don't fare very well. Edison, as mentioned, is awful, and has no comraderie with the old cast members. Stephen Fung comes off best, delivering his English lines reasonably well and managing to be fairly appealing and jokey without overselling it. Sam Lee, on the other hand, gives what must be his most over-the-top performance ever; his goofy schtick has worked elsewhere, but here he is almost unbearably cartoonish. It's getting harder and harder to believe this guy got his start in an art movie. Settle down, Sam, before it's too late!

There is, however, some good news. There are a lot of welcome cameos, including Anthony Wong, Cheung Tat-Ming, Vincent Kok and Lee Lik-Chi. Paul Rudd and Mark Hicks prove themselves to be good investments; though their dialogue is mostly cliched, it's generally not embarrassing. They deliver their lines as well as can be expected considering they're acting in a Cantonese-speaking vacuum, and are enthusiastic in their action scenes.

The robot is a cheesy idea, but it is executed fairly well. Unlike China Strike Force, which for the most part was a standard cheap action movie with an international cast, you can see where the budget went in Gen-Y Cops. There are a lot of impressive pyrotechnics, and the special effects are generally decent. Thankfully, the effects are for once intermixed with patented Hong Kong choreography and gunplay; the action is a bit more plentiful than Gen-X Cops, and is generally higher quality.

I can't recommend this movie without reservations, or say I'm happy that this is the direction big-budget HK movies are taking. Like its predecessor, though, Gen-Y Cops is a fairly entertaining watch if viewed with low expectations. If nothing else, that at least makes it better than the worthless China Strike Force and the sometimes-creative, always-stupid Skyline Cruisers.

Summary: A fun teen flick.

"Gen-Y cops" can said to be a teen flick but the result was fun. Although the movies was fun enough to watch from beginning till end but there are still some holes in between which makes the movie not unique.

The summary of this movie was located at the "Basic credits" of this page so I am not going to repeat here. Let's look at the goods and bads from it rather. First off, a big problem for a film that was produced(?) and shot in Hong Kong, LANGUAGE spoken in the movie is the problem. The plot was set to be in Hong Kong and I supposed that most of the Hong Kong movies were to be said in Cantonese. However, from the start of the movie, I knew that it's going to be weird to seat through with those ignoring english dialogues. With that flaw being put a side, the next bad thing is about the characters.

I personally didn't watch part one of this movie "Gen-X cops", neither I know whether both movies were related or not. However, when I was first being introduced to the characters in the movie, I found the character, Edison, wasn't introduced enough for me to continue though he did took the main role of the movie. Another ignoring outcome here is about the fact that actresses were actually existed in this movie. For example, Maggie Q and Christy Chung were the main actresses in this movie but I did't find it's important enough for them to exist throughout this movie.

One thing that was well filmed and produced was the hi-tech they used in the movie, although it's not new to these kind of hi-tech for the auidence as we may have watched them used even more hi-tech in the english movie "Mission Impossible". The robot and computer graphics they input throughout the movie was well done, especially the robot reminded me of watching "Robo-Cop" when I was young.

As for the performances, in general, all actors and actresses were well done in this movie although I found some actors weren't important enough for this movie as I stated above earlier. Other than that, guest starring with Anthony Wong and Eric Kot were also suitable input during the movie.

In conclusion, this kind of movie cannot be make like those serious action flicks we used to watch, it must have to be some kind of "Teen + Action = Fun" flicks to make the equation works. Although some characters flaw were involved and the dialogue thing but with all these young actors put together (that include Maggie Q), it gave the guidence a fun action ride.

I just recently seen Gen-Y on VCD. Although I thought that it was funny and had loads of action in. There were parts in it which I seriously didn't like. Like the parts where Christy Cheung is in it, there is no point of her in the film whatsoever, her character ticked me off and another part of the film that I didn't like was that for some reason that everyone in the film is speaking in English most of the time. It's alright from time to time but speaking too much is no point. It's like, can't they be speaking Cantonese as they've meant to be living there for some time (HK). Can they speak Cantonese or not these days in HK??????????

I thought that the movie like all the others was a teen action flick. But I also thought that it had a certain edge to it which could appeal to adults as well.
I thought that the movie was well plotted eventhough the characters could be described a bit more, because I felt there was a lack of background information as to who Edison and Oli was. Sam aka Alien was extremely funny in the movie with his so-called english. I remember the line "what did you say your name was?", "Eddie", "Mo son?", "mo son", "MO SON?!?!", that was a very funny part of the scene. Also I thought Edison had a very interesting line when he said "I'm Looking for a man sized lobster".
Overall I thought that the script was well written and the Hi-Tech effect was excellent. Although alittle more character development is needed.

Featuring a youthful cast of teen heartthrobs and a slick look that is the latest word in Hong Kong hi-tech, Gen-Y Cops' high production values are blunted by the lack of that most low-tech but essential element of all, a decent script. Viewers younger than Edison Chen (who just turned 20) may rate the picture 4 stars or above, but the post secondary school crowd will find the goings-on more silly/tedious than silly/fun.

This falls into the category of "live action comic book", and as such one expects nothing less or more than total escape and empty-headed glee. Alas, even Archie and Veronica possess more humanity than most of these Gen-Y-ers. The heavily promoted newcomers Edison Chen and Maggie Q are extremely cute but not permitted to display much personality. The former portrays a Hong Kong cop and the latter an American FBI agent who reluctantly join forces to track down a mad computer genius, played by Richard Sun. As Sun's role is more complex than his goody-good counterparts, he leaves a stronger impression in his Hong Kong debut.

More comfortable is the "veteran" cast of twentysomethings Stephen Fung, Christie Chung, and especially Sam Lee, whose special brand of streetwise naivete is used to good effect, particularly his ICQ-generated fractured English. Most of the stars were born and/or raised in North America, making them bilingual. Had the quality of the writing been higher, they might have provided the picture with a truly international quality.

It should be great fun watching teenagers masquerading as grown-up agents, and the movie is intermittently a hoot. Some of the stunts are fantastic, and there is enough computer gadgetry to satisfy any geek. What Gen-Y Cops needs is a sense of its own absurdities. The absence of such insight causes the movie to lurch from farce to semi-serious action, with the bickering between the Hong Kong "keystone cops" and self-righteous FBI agents tiresome and juvenile.

The picture is way overlength at 108 minutes. It is as if the filmmakers want to make sure the audience sees every last penny spent on special effects, resulting in too much dull exposition on robots at the expense of "real" characters who are almost robotic in their lack of emotional depth. As last year's Gen-X Cops' healthy box office proves, this will be of little import to adolescent ticket buyers. Can Gen-Z Cops be far behind?

Summary: Why-Y...Tell Me Why?

Upon leaving the theater after watching Gen-Y Cops you may ask yourself...Why-Y...Tell Me Why? Not intending to infringe upon the famous song by Anita Mui. You will wonder...

Y...Why were some of the significant characters from Gen-X Cops not even discussed (Jack, Y2k, etc)?

Y...Why would Match not even mention Haze when at the end of the last film he was stuck on her?

Y...Why was there so much English dialogue?

Ok, so there is no mention of Jack, Haze and Y2K. There is a newly rendered convention center, which manages to get trashed by the RS 1 robot early on. But aside from that there is no other reference to the first film. In fact the storyline is so much like a Sci-Fi comic-book that it doesn't even seem to be credible when compared with its predecessor.

So it's out with the old and in with the new, except for Match and Alien. Out with Jack and in with Edison. Not bad but he spends too much time spouting rather lame American rap with Kurt. Y2K is out and Oli is in, both beautiful, both computer nerds...yeah right. Haze is out and Jane is in. Do you really think the FBI lets their agents dress like that? Doubtful, but then again who's complaining? Finally, the Old Madame from X is replaced by newer and younger Madame Chung (a.k.a. Christy Chung) in Y. Sadly she is not much more that eye candy here and her talent is wasted in her underwritten role.

Of course the big break from Gen-X comes in the form of the RS1 robot. This along with some strange type of 'computer hypnosis' device catapults Gen-Y Cops into the realm of science fiction. While the robot itself is ok, it might have been more exciting to see him take on Sally Yeh (I Love Maria) or Amy Yip (Robotrix) rather than the Gen Y Cops and the other automatons shown in the film.

What Gen-Y does have over Gen-X is allot more CG, a bit more humor and a few more cameos. That doesn't make it a better film, but it does pass for entertainment.
