Summary: Utter rubbish
How can I sum up Zhan You the easiest? Well, to make things clear, this is a 75 minute rollercoaster ride to nowhere. Its basically Rick Laus version of Young & Dangerous, but even worse. Considering his last film before this (Super Car Criminals), one would hope this would be a drastic improvement
forget it! Its fights, followed by fights, throw in a couple of love scenes (which look more like rape!), and throw in a couple more fights
and you have Zhan You! This is so bad, I dont really want to write up on the story (what there is of it), but if youve seen Y&D then its the same thing pretty much (the so called loyalty between young friends mixed up with triads). It does pick up halfway through, but only for about 10 minutes before getting bad again.
As far as film quality goes, its not really anything special anyway considering whats going on, even with the amount of fight scenes there are no cleaver effects to make it look real, it just looks so dull and quite honestly fake. They appeared to use camcorders too it would seem! I myself am also involved in small time film production (also including directing) as well as music, and even I can do much better than this, and I certainly dont claim to be an expert.
Im glad nobody else has reviewed this yet as I hope to save many people from disappointment, and so if you were planning on seeing this, make a sharp turn and skip it. I know I put down Y&D films often enough, but this is really 10 times worst than those, so youve got to take my word on this!! This is probably the worst film I saw of last year (2001).
Oh, and would someone please lend Ricky Lau a bigger budget of say $500 so he can make a better film next time?
