Reviewed by: pjshimmer Date: 02/09/2002 A terrible sit-through that consists of nothing interesting. One can have high hopes for the overall plot, but the result is simply dreadful. The martial arts has got to be the worst from any 90s wuxia movie. I mean, they don't have to be extremely good like that of Iron Monkey, Fire Dragon or Swordsman 2, but the action in this movie is not even up to the standards of old-school movies from 15 years ago. I liked the emotional appeals from the romantic subplot (as I always would), but they're far from adequate enough to save the movie. Plus, the leads were extremely uncharasmatic, which certainly didn't help at all. Best to avoid it at all cost! [2/10]

Reviewed by: ButterflyMurders Date: 02/09/2002 I'm quite surprised no-one has reviewed this film yet, so I will (somewhat) gladly be the first. Firstly, the story. Wilson Lam is a rock spirit (not a god) who, after watching a heartbroken woman throw herself into the sea because her lover, a spirit, had been taken away, attempts to defy the Sun/Ruler God (the wonderfully dramatic Lau Shun). While escaping from the Lau Shun's wrath Lam meets and eventually falls in love with Vivian Chow, a rather weak damsel with a spirit-slaying sword. Did I make this film sound interesting? Well, unfortunately this film is not as good as it sounds and quite sluggishly paced. Aside from Lau Shun (always interesting to watch) and Wu Ma as the henpecked, somersaulting Moon God there is little of interest that happens. A lot of the film is taken up by Chow and Lam's supposedly blooming relationship but it was unfortunate there was little chemistry evident between the too. Paul Chun Pui also is added-on...I mean appeared for a few scenes, and does nothing except die and give a few things to the besieged couple. Well, I guess this film does have a slightly redeeming quality-for one of the quirkiest climatical fight scenes around. These scenes basically involve a bunch of people flying through the air while moving their arms and legs frantically. And how did Lam manage to blow people off cliffs? Easy, by yelling at them! It's easy if you know how! Basically, this is a pretty average quality B-grade film. There are worse ways to spend an insomniatic night!
