Weak romantic comedy with poor chemistry betwwen the leads. Little screen time betweens the stars Sammi Cheng and Richie Ren doen't set up the ending well. The movie works better when we follow Sammi on her own. 6/10

okay, so sammi rocks, and in my opinion, alays will. but richie ren just annoys the hell outta me. what the...?! has anyone seen summer holiday? whats with the yahoo!! ?
anyway, i saw the cover with sammi in that gorgeous dress, and richie in the tux, and i thought this would be a totally different movie, like an actual replay of cinderella with a few spunky twists.
but alas, i hoped too much. instead i got a slow movie that plodded along without much zap. sammi looked like she was going through the motions, and richie was his usual annoying self. christmas???! give me a break.
only if you must 6/10

Summary: In Between of Good and Bad

Marry a Rich Man which stars the very bankable Sammi Cheng who once again collaborates with Richie Ren (remember them both from Summer Holiday?)

After watching it the first time I was quite disappointed with the idea concept and especially with the ending (which I will not give away in this review).

The whole idea of marrying a rich man goes back to the stone age, fairy tales which you read when you were in elementary school, remember all those Disney fairytales? Well, this is not that different from those.

This movie is not as funny as I expected it would be. The whole story focuses on Sammi's character (Mi) wanting to marry a rich man because that is what her father wants and because she sees all her classmates have married rich men. What happened to marry the person you truly love? Which used to be the main theme and concept in her other movies. In this movie, it is implied and it is there, but mostly it focuses on marrying a rich person. It seems like that is the only thing in life, the only way a person will have salvation and vitality, which is sad.

Her character Mi really stands for "Me." I want a rich man, I want to have the glass slippers, I want the sparks, I want this, I want that. It's all about Me, Me, Me.

I won't go into talking about Richie Ren's character because that will ruin it for everyone.

The only enlightening part in this whole movie is watching Jan Lam (Lam Hoi Fung, who is Cass Pang's husband). Jan portrays a rich guy named Wilson who used to be classmates with Mi. He falls madly in love with her and wants to marry her. Jan dons on fake teeth and a shaved head for this role, he is quite charming and funny, too bad he does not have too much screen time.

After watching it the second time, it does not seem so bad, but still I don't really recommend this movie.

This movie is so-so and I have to say I really HATE the ending to this movie. Most of the time I was quite disappointed with the idea and concept of this movie. This one is somewhat of a sleeper.

Summary: Watchable...

Just throwing in briefly, since I watched this some time ago. Considering my expectations for this were rock-bottom, I found it reasonable enough; it's pretty well-made, and you can see it was in the works for a while, given that there's a City Entertainment magazine with Okinawa Rendezvous on the cover in the background of one shot. The movie isn't laugh-filled, and the romance is pretty unconvincing, but it did take one or two unexpected turns once or twice, refreshing for a movie like this. Considering the casting I was expecting a Summer Holiday redux, but thankfully there was a little more content here than that. Still, not anything great, just a fair time-killer. I guess I only really like these Sammie Cheng romantic comedies when Johnnie To does them.

Edit: I may be just a little bit lenient on this movie because here Sammi resembles a girlfriend of mine down to some very fine details and wears a sweatshirt from my college.

Summary: Same Sammi, Same Richie

The title "Marry a Rich Man" is exactly what the movie is about. In a nutshell, I was a little disappointed at the storyline. The beginning looked promising up until the part where Sammi Cheng was on the hill screaming the title. At that moment, I wasn't really sure if this was a romantic comedy or a sci-fi film. Then, just as I thought the story was over and the ending is coming, I look at the clock and realize that I'm only half way, but it felt like 90 minutes. Anyway, there were a few factors that made me keep watching. Firstly, the scenery of a foreign country. Secondly, Jan Lam's character. He practically stole the show because he was so hilarious in all of his scenes. And Lastly, to hear Sammi's songs.

Is it just me, or is Sammi Cheng playing the same person over and over again in her recent movies since "Needing You"? Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Sammi's, but if you're looking for some diversity in her, stick to her music because you won't find it in her movies. However, I can understand why she's a guaranteed box office hit in Hong Kong. She's got a sense of innocence that leaves the audience rooting for her characters, and her looks aren't too bad either. Also, don't forget a hit song that comes with every single one of her movies.

The other main character, Richie Jen, is the same as always: bad cantonese, always smiling, same old, same old.

Overall, I'd recommend this movie to those who are a fan of Sammi's, or those who are looking for a simple romantic comedy with low expectations.

Summary: Marry A Writer

It seems that the only thing Sammi is able to do after "Needing You", is make more "Needing You's". Unfortunately, Sammi has been playing the same part ever since with every male lead in HK. Now it's back to Richie Ren, the worse actor on the planet. He looks like his head is about to wobble off his shoulders. Ever see those "bobbing head" dolls on the dash board? Sammi, marry a writer, that way he could write you something else.

Summary: Another disappointment.

Once again, I've been lured into watching a movie starring Sammi Cheung, only to be disappointed by an eyebrow-raising, pointless movie. A large part of the movie was shot in Milan, but one can't help wondering if the crew was on some kind of shopping spree in Europe, and suddenly decided to shoot a few scenes here and there, and instead of making it into an MTV, they decided to blow it up into a full-fledged movie with a 15-minute plotline. The movie starts off ok, with a few funny moments, like Richie Ren (a Mandarin speaker) teaseing a character's Cantonese accent, or Sammi's blunders playing mahjong. But like another reviewer said, I had trouble convincing myself to watch the 2nd half of the VCD. The writers should have quit while they were ahead when they realized they didn't have much to work on, instead of shooting such meaningless scenes at the last 10-15 minutes of the movie.
I have a bad feeling Sammi Cheung is going to be nominated AGAIN as Best Actress in this movie for no particular reason. (Hey, she got nominated for looking lost and blank most of the time in "Needing You"!)

Summary: Typical Romantic Comedy with Sammi Cheng

Marry a Rich Man is just another typical Sammi romantic comedy, although this movie definitely borders towards ridiculous comedy at times. Sammi plays Mi, a village girl who wants to marry a rich man. She comes across a book sent to her from space that teachs her how to become a Cinderella so that she can win over a rich guy. In Sammi's quest for love she meets a guy named Christmas, played by Richie Ren, on a flight to Milan. The movie then just follows the two of them as they try to get together.

The movie ends up being fairly predictable. And although there are moments when the movie is really slow, I must admit that I enjoyed many of the moments. Much of the movie and particularly the ending are obviously unrealistic, but the Marry and Rich Man still has its fun moments. 7/10

Summary: BAD AS BAD CAN BE

I tried, I tried so so hard to watch this to the end, but couldn't. This is awful. It really is. I watched the first 30 minutes waiting for something to happen, then it hit me, this was not going to improve. So by the time the first disc finished I couldn't bring myself to put the second in. Now some people might think I can't say this if I haven't seen the second half, but if the first half was as bad as it was then I don't see how a film can be given much of a rating if it bores the viewer for the first 45 mins.

The 'story' if you can call it that has been descibed as an 'up to date Cinderalla story', and unfortunatly is exactly what it looks like. Sammi plays a poor girl, and wants to marry a rich man...Richie Ren. Yaaaaaawn.

It's a romance comedy...but as usual, the romance is too fake, and the comedy is not funny. I'm not trying to put it down, but like I've said before, I'm being honest and anyone else who watches this needs to be as well, because you will be disapointed.

I wouldn't even recommend this to the Sammi fans, because though I have always liked her, her last few movies have been as bad as her last few albums. I really can't recommend this to anyone - though I'm sure someone will argue with me.
