Simon Tam (Andy Lau) is Private Detective Simon Tam, a very righteous and brillant detective. His master is very superstitious and has decreed him to work for free for 3 years 8 months. At the beginning of this movie, it has been 3 years 7 months and 28 days since Simon has last gotten paid for investigating a case. He helps investigate all kinds of cases for free, ranging from a woman with a missing daughter to giving scientific evidence advice to a barrister (lawyer).
His somewhat gay assistant Joe (Simon Lui) jumps the gun by a day and accepts, for $1 million dollars advance down payment, a case involving missing money. However, the next day, the client mysteriously dies. However, Simon, in his righteous manner, decides to find the money for the deceased person's wife (Rosamund Kwan).
