Reviewed by: kiliansabre Date: 11/11/2007 Summary: Impressive Two kung fu masters, each with a style of their own, take on a disruptive man in town, defeating him. However when the greatful civilians start arguing over which master's style is better, the two refuse to talk to each other. They each open up schools to teach their styles when a mysterious stranger appears to have his son's learn kung fu, with one learning a style from each school. In the meantime Sei Lengjai(Stephen Tung),a kung fu wannabe befriends a wandering kung fu master (Sammo Hung) who convinces him it's best to learn every style you can, so Sei Lengjai studies from both teachers. When the mysterious strangers intentions are revealed it may be up to Sei Lengjai and his new teacher (Sammo Hung) to save the day. Lots of familiar faces in this one, the usual crew that surrounded Sammo at the time. There are also tons of later prominent stars in supporting roles such as Lam Ching Ying who shows up briefly in a fight at one of the schools about half way in. The story takes a while to figure out where it is going - not that it is badly written, but the main plot doesn't come out until a bit into the movie. The characterizations here are great as you would expect from a movie that Sammo clearly had his fingers deep in. The fight scenes are impressive throughout with nearly every prominent character getting to show off at some point. The most impressive fights come towards the end of the movie when Sammo uses his 'growing staff' to take on a master of short spears and the final fight with the villian and his acrobatic posse. There is a great detail here to authentic styles of kung fu, not to be missed by fans of Sammo or the comedy kung fu genre. Reviewer Score: 8

The late 70's were proving grounds for Sammo Hung, as even without Golden Harvest or big budget production company, he could still make a kung fu classic! Hung is given a box of chopsticks to make a movie out of, and he does more than that by making a classic. The low budget adds SO much creativity in this movie. In fact, the training scenes and final fight with Li Hoi San are some of Sammo's most creative work! The production company and director knew of Hung's potential, so they let him run the show, and that's the way it goes when Sammo Hung is in your movie. The casting is great, the pacing is wonderful, the script and acting are colorful, and the action is #1. ****/*****

Reviewed by: STSH Date: 02/16/2001 Summary: 1/3 Awful, 2/3 Great The first half-hour or so of this pic is mostly silly comedy. Think The Three Stooges having learned some Wing Chun. Either tolerate it, or fast forward past the really silly bits, 'cause the rest is definitely worth it. From the point where Sei Lengjai begins serious training with Fei Jai, the fu and the training sequences are good to outstanding. Stephen Tung does jaw-dropping stuff, like leaping up and touching his toes in mid air then landing with legs spread parallel to the ground and feet resting on two tables about six feet apart, then proceeds to toss trays of buns from table to table. Major ouch ! Lee Hoi Sang brings in a group of coordinated acrobatic fighters, and their scenes against the two leads are breathtaking (some of the action design in this scene was later recycled in The 18 Bronze Girls). And the choice of music is really something else. When Stephen Tung is training on oil, the tune played is similar to Zorba The Greek although, by some of the physical comedy, I think it was meant to give a Russian ambience. Overall, recommended. Reviewed by: SBates Date: 02/06/2001 Summary: Run of the Mill, but Nice Fights It ain't THE VICTIM or WARRIORS TWO, but this will keep fans of kung-fu comedies interested. Tung Wei pulls off some nice kung-fu tricks, Sammo Hung is funny as a kung-fu eatin' machine, and Philip Ko absolutely steals the show in one great fight scene. Sammo duels a spearman (actor unknown, I think he was in FEARLESS HYENA 2) in another superb fight. 2 of 4 stars.
