Like one of the songs that Isabella Kau Hung Ping sings in the flick, Hong Kong is prosperous on one side and dirty on one side. Nevertheless, Hong Kong is still the place to stay because everybody has a chance to be something if you are willing to work hard. As the flick attests, everybody works hard and makes something out of their life. Isabella Kau, 2nd runner up in the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant, plays a nice girl named Hung who becomes a pub singer after toiling in a sweaty factory. Andy Lau plays a young lad named Alan who fails as a cosmetic salesman only to later become an important cog in some insurance and real estate company. Another guy named Ah Fei (Newton Lai Hon Chi) plays some construction worker who is on the verge of following his dream of being a champion kickboxer. With all the good that happens, the bad is sure to follow as each person who gains some kind of success starts to feel failure or a big letdown afterwards. Hung decides to leave her long time boyfriend, Ah Fei, and marry some older guy to immigrate to the US. Alan experiences quite a few tragedies as the few people in his life that meant a lot to him passes away or decides to leave him to pursue their own dreams. Lastly, Ah Fei, feeling down in out over the lost of Hung decides to throw away his chance of becoming a boxer in Australia by partaking in some local underground boxing matches. All in all, the movie is a decent social drama that is kind of spry to start off but winds up making you feeling depressed by the time the flick ends. Recommonded.
